Thursday, May 27, 1897. Six Its. For more than 3 years since locat ing here we Lave repeatedly remind ed the town council and the tax payers of this borough of the neces sity of providing some adequate means for protection against the ravages of fiire. Providence and everything else was in favor of the town on Saturday. We will name six "ifa" either of which would have meant a total destruction of the towo and the more we' think of it the more we are constrained to be lieve that this fire is timely warning to the borough o.provde protection against the loss of property by fire. There were so many things in our favor on Saturday that the situation ought to be thoroughly reviewed and underntood. First. If the lire would have started at night sufficient aid could not have been summoned to extin guish the fire on eleven or more builJiugs which of course would soo have spread to all parts of the town. Second. A strong wind such as prevailed lust Thursday, Friday or Sunday wculd have put tho lire be yond tho control of any power in Middlt-burgh and before nnv foreign uid could come, the lire would have iiinJe siiL-h liendwav that nothing of liny account could have bet-u saved. 1 hlrd. If Sutler's and Kerns pumps hud not been in town, no bucket brigade could have checked the fire where it was stopped. Fourth. If it had not been for Millard Hassinger's arrivul in J. W. Runkle's stable in time to extinguish the lire in the straw, a new impetus would have been aJded to the fire and exposed other and more danger ous buildings. Fifth. If W. F. Feeso's house and shanty had been covered with shin gles instead of the shanty being covered with corrugated roofing and the house with slate, no means at hand could have outened the sparks as rapiJly an they fell upon those buildings. The burning of Feese's house Aould have started the con flagration eastward and westward for a clean sweep until foreign aid would come. Sixth. If the fire had not been fought so desperately men scorch ing and roasting themselves near the fire it could not have been stopped. It took six "ifs" to save the town from total destruction and yet the auti protection element will argue aguinst the necessities of such pro tection. It seems as though the on lv argument in favor of protection ugaiufct tire that will bo ell'ective is some practical experience wiiu lire. IL Post and the P. O. S. of A, Camp of this place attended services in a body at the Lutheran church. The church was beautiful ly decorated with flags and bunting while the pulpit was draped with the stars and stripes. The venerable Rev.
