Tho editor of tho Clearfield Re publican, who is about retiring after forty years active service, pets elf the following : Editing a newspaper is a pleasant business if you can stand it. If it contains many advertisements the subscribers complain that they Jake too much spao i. If there is a scarcity of advertising it is unpopular uud tho people won't have it. If we attend church regularly they say we go for effect. If wo stay away from cburcb tlioy say we are monstrously hoalhouisli. If wo accept an invitation to a wed ling they say wo were only in vited to "rite it un." If we go to the opera house, they say we go on freo tickets. If we are seen upon the streets too often they say we neglect our busi ness. If we avoid going ou the streets they say we don't hustle arouud af ter the news. If wo reject a loug winded coin muuicatioti its author becomes fu riously enraged and discontinues his paper. If we publish lengthy ommuuici tious our readers say we lack discre tion and put iu anything "to till up." If we neglect to decorate our of fice windows ou the Fourth of July, they sav we lack enterprise aud that there isn't a drop of patriotic blood flowing iu our degraded carcasses. If wo swell out a new suit of clothes aud celebrate grouud hog day, they say we got our good clothes in payment jfor advertising, and that we are by fir too foppish, If, in our frailty, we sometimes perpetrate a j ke, or m iko u stag ger at a poor little pun, tlioy say wo are exceedingly light, and won't do. If we omit auy jokes they say we are pojr, miserable fossils. If wo are single they sav wo ur too helpless to nut uiarriud. If we are u1t single they say it is a pity for our wives. If we publish a man who lias brought (lisgruco upon his family, the friends of the family never for give us. If wo out of goodness of heart decline to say anything on tho subject, the man's enemies are dis appoiu'ed, and wo are branded as white-livered cowards. We aro able to stand those rapt and many more, and me always ready to receivo visitors whothoi ac companied by n dog or not.
