HISTORY OF A WILD MAN. Prof. J. N Brosiuj of Mt. Pleasant Mills Write a L.'tter fram Slackesburg, S. C, Discn'oin t'ns Lfj ol a Hermit. J i'.iii S:-irii! U more familiarly known nn wil 1 John Starns, or "Tlie Wil.l Man of S iuth Carolina." His abode i found! in tho wild, about five miloa north-west of lllucksburtf, S. C, uinl his remaikablo history will no doubt be of interest to our northern oMier, who, unliko him, went out :niil fought for the priiiL-i nlcs thev held dear. Interviews ami photographs of this refiiarkablo character have benn Bought after time ntnl again with littlo or no success. I am promt as A Pennsylvania!! ami still more s i as a Hn viler count inn to enjoy tin (lis tinctiou of interviewing ami Hocuring photograph of this unique specimen of humanity. My success however, in procuring tlu-so photographs is wholly duo to V. A. liisoin. tho g, nial manager of the American Virw Ca.locate.l at lilacksbur.S. C, wiio is also a Snvib r countian, and in whoso company I visitod this will man of South Carolina. Oreat persuasivo efforts were ro Borteil to by Mr. llasom before per mission was granted to photograph the wild man ami his place of dwell- Tim romantic history of John Sturna is as follows : At tho breaking out of the war of tho It fl).lliiti, he with others iu the fn.ii'lili.iriioii.1 were draughted for oervici) in the Coufodei ate Army Doling tho liiiilit the matter resie. ho Ji.mviIv on lii-i mind that ho con eluded to net a coward and bo a do horter rather than bo a defender o the southern confederacy, lo es capo t he clutches of the war ho tool refuge under a dry goods box stand ing in his vard, whore he was never apprehended. Tlio same box, though weather beaten, and time worn, still affords a hlecping apartment for ol John StaniH. At night fall that day he took his box and hied away to tlie mountain, whero for n number o years lie dwelt in a cave and slept in his box. After all dangers of war had bu1 eided, and peace had been fully ic stored, his friends.who seldom visit od him, bi -"i1ed iu persuading him -'0P' alio 'to, M ....... -w, pl'lOH tz it the namo "Homo." Ho is a typo of wondor and amaze ment to the many peoplo who go to koo him iu his rudo manner of living. Very few, however, are successful enough to boo the wild man himself, as ho generally hios away to tho woods whon ho hears any one ap proach his rudo habitation. Our buccoss in gaining a full view of tins odd, looking human being, and his Burroiiudiugs was mainly due to a negro guide who is (piito intimate wit ti him. After a rough drivo of more th in half a mile from tho pub lie road through thickets, over fields, ami ditches, over pine sapplings and underbrush, wo reached tho abode of thit interesting would-be rebel Koldler. He was workiug iu one of Ids fields iioar by whon wo approached. No Hoouor was ho awaro of our coming than ho made a bio ik for tho woods. The negro guido followed him and pel Minded him to return. In fifteen miuutos after our arrival we had tlie pleasuro of looking on tho oddest looking humau being I ever saw. According to his looks no ono will doubt his being wild. IIo is s man of littlo more than ordinary height, lean and far from being hand some. His body as well as his . clothes Heeiu to toll of a scarcity of water and soap. His hair hangs . down over his shoulders, and his . shoos nro tiod to his feet with strings. His house is built of pine sapplings and is about fifteen feet long, six feot wide and four foot high, covered with pieces of boards, bark aud brush. It is dividod off into two apartments, one of which is used as a rceoptaclo for corn, and tho othor forms tho handiest kitchen and din ing room combined, that Snydor county women ever droumod of, for in it ho lies down to cook and oat. Dish washing is entirely unknown to him, infactthoreis only a pan and a coffee-pot. He subsists mainly on corn broad, of his own manufacture, and coffoo. The bread he makes by gtiring corn meal in water with bis fingers, or a stick, and bakes it over his onon fire. When interrogated as to his viewi on matrimony lie replied, "I have had many offers of marriage, bat cannot consider any till I have my house in a better condition, and be sides I muBt have new clothes so I will look like a gentleman." If such is the case, be will, in my opinion, re main single for many more years to come. When Mr. Banom queried of the negro guide whether old John wasn't lousy he replied, "no 'deed boss, he is so dirty de lice can tstay on nun. Ho seldom washes, and if he does he npits on a rag and rubs it around his face, which is a very ineffectual mode of ablution. This wild man is of very great interest to the people of the South, and a trip to his abid ing place is never regretted by any one. Theodore Steppiss. Jury List.
