How Will a Test Result 7 The Benvertown corrt'Bpoiuh'nt to the Herald lust wi-ek Bays : "In taut week's inAiie of tho 1'oht an article rtpiwiin'd which tho teach erB of the weMt end of tho county think needs a reply. It ntntod that comparatively few teachers of the present times were reading papers. This undoubtedly is au idea of an old 'way-back' who knows very little of the teachers of the present day. Because, the teachers of the present, us our Co. Supt. knows, and must keep abreast with the times ami cur rent events or ho is not "in it." The teachers of tho west end of good old .Snyder regard tho article as a nlur upon their profession and declare that they read as many educational and newspapers as some of tho Edi tors or anv other person ; wo feel safe in saying that there are very few teacliei s in tho county w ho are not regular newsphper readers. They furthermore deem any body welcome to anv beimlit he may de rive from publication.'' We shall be only too glad to learn that wo had been ii.isin formed con cerning the reading habits of the teachers of Snyder county. It will lie tho happiest development of this week's institute to learn that the toachorB as a class aro newspaper readers. We know that many teachers do read the papers. It was not for this class that tho editorial was written. Tho article was put forth as an eye opener for those who do not read. Tho editorial can in uo wiso be considered a slur upon thoso who do read the newspapers, but hh a compliment to them. On tho other hand, to those who do not freely read the newspapers, such admonition is timely. It is for this latter class that tho advice was giv en and is one of the Balient points that go to make up the qualifications of a wide awake teacher. We propose to make i test.T wrf-il- nreitf l .iM VtCVerTn,i.. , ji mir. tveek's Post contain , a list of !UH5 books which will be tgtveu away to new subscribers and to those who pay in advance In the list will bo found books by such famous authors us Thomas Curly le, Washington Irving, W. M. Thacker ay, J. Fcniinore Cooper, George Kliot uud many others. Tho Middleburgh Tost has made u special elTert toward placing teach ers and prospective teachers in a po sition to secure the best possible training for their work. To this end the Post lias given away about !?.'M0 in scholarships at the Blooms burg State Normal School as prizes. This should htamp tho 1'ost as a friend of the teachers and not as the correspondent from Bcavertown prefers to assume, "a r-lur to the touchers." V'c prefer to believe, however, that tho correspondent was led astray by attributing wrong motives to tho Editor's desire to inculcate a reading habit where it does not exist. We know that the lleraUFa correspondent rends the Post and appreciates its service in behalf of intellectual progress. We prefer to believe that we were mistaken in our former editorial uud now take the privilege of putt ing the matter of reading to the teachers of the county nnd await re sults. A Historical Character Dies. In the denth of Daniel Stuck, late of West Perry Township, tho oldest resident of the county and a deeen dent of the famous Stuck family has passed away. Ho died November 11th ut the good old age of !7 years, 2 months and 20 days. In 1781 his stepmother mid her two kohs wire killed by the Indians in the well known Stuck Massacre near llreain er. It appears that the men belonging to the family wero nt work in the fields when u party of Indians who had been Ferreted in tho woods close by swooped down upon the defence lc--i women and immediately toma hawked Mrs. Stuck, while hh was in t !,e net of defending herself with a i- noe pole. Having dispatched he r out right, the redskins ulso killed two of the children nnd a man who hnp t)( ned to bo near. They then scalp ed their victims nnd neizing young Mrs. Stuck, the wife of one of the Stuck boys, proceeded to carry her away with them into tho forest. Ov i icomo with tho horrible scenes bhe had beheld, the young woman faint- ed before they reached the woods with her, when she also was put to death by the tomahawk and drag ging her for a considerable distance into the thickets she was scalped aud left a prey to the birds and animals. The entire settlement immediately became aroused at the sudden on slaught and sent for three well known Indian fighters then living or being at the time at what is known as the f-'hamokin Dam, Snyder county, by the name of Grove, Pence and Stroh and accompanied with these brave and resclutc men, the nettlers start ed in pursuit to capture the maraud ing Indians. They made off in the direction of tho New York Border where they were overtaken and kill ed by tho white pursuers in the course of a few days, while sitting about their fires in the forest, re counting, doubtless the incidents of their expedition.
