Tlt platform of tlic Denioenttie .State Convention hi'M ut Harris burtr, last weok says : "We declare that the dint m 1ml financial condi tion of the country has followed lle publicau administration, nud tbiit tho business depression bus result ed from vicious legislation for which the Republican party is wholly re sponsible." Possibly so at least it is not abso lutely necessary to ro into any elab orate controversion of these verv . vrv flippttn ''''TH just. mi. tuis time. It may, however, bo casually remarked that it is at least a striking coincidence that these "business depressions" al ways attended periods of Democrut ic control, nnd that tho "vicious leg islation" referred to did not develop its perdicious effects as loug as tho Republican party was in control of legislation nnd administration. SaJ Straits in Kansas f(tl . - iik condition ot tno farmers m Kansas who have mortgages on their lands which arc mat wring is far front enviable. Jk-st f the mortgages are owned by Kastern investors and capitalists who are calling in their money as fast as they mature. The largo companies in tho Kast which deal in Kansas securities find that there is no call for them. Most nil companies doing business in Kansas aro pulling out as fast as thev ran. uot for want of business, but for the reason that tho legislation sentiment and general antagonistic feeling to ward a loan company is vicious and vindicative Kansas loans will not sell in the East because- tho conli dence in them is nil gone. While this is a much to bo regrett ed state of affairs, it is something that has been expected for some time, nnd it causes no surprise in financial or well informed circles. The foolish, yet dangerous senti ments promulgated by Kansas upon linnnco and money, have convinced the business men nnd investors in tho Kast that such ruinous legisla tion ns proposed, much of it being in nctual operation in thnt State, merits tho severest rebuke nnd, ns a consequence, financial centres in tho Kast will do ns littlo business with Kansas ns possible until tho lluaucial cranks in Kunsas uro rel egated into tho oblivion from which they unhappily camo. What Kan Has need to do is to get their State into its former reasonable condition nnd have its laws in future niado by men of sense. There Is Money Enough. Those persons who persist in at tributing tho recent monetary crisis to a lack of money have uot nn iota of fact to stand upon. Tho truth is that tho crisis came upon us in a sea son of inflation. On September 1 tho wholo stock of currency in tho country gold, silver nnd paper- was $2,155,100,817. Of this vast sum 91,080,552,671, was in the hands of the people, and 917l.5'.i8,14 in the custody of the Government. Never before in the history of the country, cither in good times or bad times, was there so much money in circu lation, nor "money of such universal credit and purchasing power. Prac tically, the gold dollar is the unit of valuo of the whole vast aggregate. Tho trouble which befell us was tho doubt thrown upon tho ultimate ability of the Government to keep over-valued silver and paper cur rency, amounting to $1,600,000,000, at par with gold if the policy of sil ver purchases should bo persisted in. Tho result of thnt doubt has given us a frightful and timely les sen through the fearful losses con sequent on shaken eonfidenco nnd disturbed credit. llut tho lesson will have been thrown away if we shall attempt to cure the evils that beset us by still further tempting financial destruction by issues of promises to pay dollars without adequatn provision for redemption when tho dollars shall have been called for.
