If this be so the House should tako action ut once. Tho Republican party of Pennsylvania is strong but j not strong enough to carry a wrong. There is a bill now before tho House making an appropriation of j $10,000 to place fish ways at Chirks Ferry and Shamokin dams, in tho Susquehanna river, and at the Mil lerstown dnm in the Juniata river. It may be tint tho placing of these dams will do some good iu permit ting fish to pass up the river, but if the fishways are as useless as the one at Columbia dam the money will simply be wasted. Every year we hear the old story that fishways can be of service if placed properly. Why doesn't somebody place them in position to give the fish a chance? An exchange says another swind ler is working the country districts. His game is a new one and the farmers bite at it. Keep your eye on it, and if it de creases and disappears it shows a state of the nir that is sure to be followed by fine weather ; but if it increase, take your overcoat with you if you're going away from home, for falling weather is not far oft". Tho reason is this. When the air is becoming I'harged with electricity you will see every cloud attracting all lesser one toward it until it gath ers into a shower, aud, on tho con trary, when tho iluid is passing oil' or diffusing itself, then a largo cloud will be seen breaking into pieces and dissolving. Our people are requested to petition for or against it as may bo their wish, for upon such petitions hangs the fate of the bill. , An error has been discovered in the new one-cent postage stamp is sued by the Government on January 1. Instead of reading "Columbus in night of land," it reads "Colurarus iu sight of land." If such nn error will creep into as littlo a thing ns a postage stamp, is it any wonder that they nre found in newspapers where ten thousand little particles of lead each representing a character are usod in its composition. Either a disordered stom ach, decayed or neglected teeth, or catarrhal troubles, any one of which is easily remedied if taken iu time. There is nothing so offensive, how ever, as bail breath, aud tho woman no matter how dainty and sweet she may look, she loses her charm if she has bad breath. The sanio may bo said of men. We do not caro how cleanly a man is otherwise, if ho don't take caro of his teeth ho is impure all over. A neat gold tilling iu a gentleman or lady's tooth is a direct evidence of intelligence and refinement. It makes us tired to hear a person, of either gender, enter ou u tyrate upon the foulness of tobacco chewing whoso breath is strong euough to carry a hat. For goodnet-s sake chew something. Chow anything, but we recommend a tiny bit of oris (or iris) root which if finely chewed and allowed to remain in the mouth a few moments will re fine and sweeten the breath. To Pruit Growers. A number of fruit growers, espec ially of applos, have asked me, in re gard to my success iu spraying ap ple trees during tho past season. To all such I would say that I have been very successfull, and would advise every one to spray, aud if you have only half a dozen trees it will pay you. Would also state that I can furnish any kind of pump you may want horse power, barrel, or bucket pump, but for general use the barrel pump is what you want. You can't buy them any cheaper from the factory thau at what I sell them, and will give nil necessary in- truotions for its use, and that is worth a great deal to successfull spraying. Thero is positively no use trying to grow apples success fully without spraying, for if they are wormy they will not keep, but drop off beforo they are matured. You can, also fight the caterpillar with a vengeance and all other cue mies of tho apple, quince, plum, pear aud grape. But ou tho other hand let no body be too sanguine. You must watch and spray at tho right time and also see that your trees are kept in growing condition and otherwise, healthful and freo from tho borir. As regards tho question of paying thero is no question about that, and then the satisfaction of eating nice apples. ( l I 1 U V'V I. for the IN i Vants Farmers. For tho benefit of tho ladies who are interested iu the ideal propor tions for female form we publish tho following : The proportion of the Venus do Medici wero as follows : Height, f feet 7 inches ; across tho shoulders, lilj inches ; bust, IIS inches j arm, 12 inches ; thigh, 21 inches ; calf, 12 inches ; neck, 1UJ inches ; hips, 12 inches ; length of leg, 'M inches; length of arm, i!S inches; ankle, !J inches. An artist gives liis measurements of heads. That upon the Venus de Medici is H inch es iu diameter, but about 7 inches is the ideal measurement. The width of the shoulders in an ideal figure is twice that of the head, uii.l the extended urms measure the same as the height of the figure. Of course there is no objection to young men clipping the same and keeping it in their note book for the purpose of making comparisons. Men these days want everything, even in that particular, to size up properly. Better Roads Demanded. Numerously signed petitions for road improvement are being receiv ed by members of both branches of tho legislature. The most popular is one iu which the petitioners rep resent "that for many years the roads of the State have been iu a very bad condition, and from the increase iu population and travel are likely to become worse under tho present road laws. We there fore pray your honorable bodies to enact a road law dispensing with tho election of road supervisors in each township, and stopping the as sessing of road taxes on all farm and agriculture land for ten years, and placing tho management of roads and L'Vidges under the care of a superintendent of roads with headquarters at Harrisburg, and authorized to appoint and control a superintendent of roads iu each county, with office in each county ueat.aud each county superintendent to appoint and control u road super intendent in each township or road district, aud repealing all present road laws." a Words of Condolence.
