Fitmtm anil Paperin t Female School Teachers. Fomale Hchool teachers may be said to be au innovation of the lant decade or two. Time was when it was thought women were unable to teach in the public hcIiooIh, for two reaHonn luck of ability to teach RcholurH, and wnnt of tact in con trolling them. Doth uleun have been exploded. Kvery year more women enter the profession of teaching. In the country, where ncholaiH were regarded the more refractory, one malo teacher after another in sup planted by a woman. It speaks vol umes for our boys and gilrt that they are more easily controlled by n wo man's word than the birchen reed of the old lime masters. Nature tits woman for u teacher, while n man must obtain his training mechani cally. In her habits also a woman is better fitted as n teacher of the young. She does not run the streets at night, or does she indulge in questionable practices. She does uot git "boozy." She does not swear, and all kinds of slang or un seemly language are strangers to her lips. JShe is usually religious, instead of indifferent ; modest, and not forward ; tender iu her own feel ings 'ii ul thoughtful about those of others; neither viscious nor venge ful : patient and forbearing, with an intution for ministering to chil dren which iu man is found in meagre measure. Lverytliing a woman does is pure ; every ting she says is wholesale. Her success, than, as a teacher, is not a paradox. Gradully her titness for such posi tion is being recognized, and ere many decades she will outnumber man in the profession of teaching us man now outnumbers her. The world then may still be far from the millenium, but schools will be n great deal better. The gills will be taught the worth and sanctity of womanhood; mid the boys, thr.tas the world respects a woman, so will it respect itself. Apropos of the natural qualiticaiions of woman as a teacher, and the success that every where attends her in this calling, the logical inference is that she should receive pay commensurate witli her work, which unhappily is not the case. She may do the same work that a man does, and likely she will do it u great deal better, yet save in rare instances is she al lowed an equal salary. This is a relic of a by gone age, w hen physical labor formed the basis .if wuges, which has been trausin by cus tom to the present day hose in telligence, however, is ast over coming the prejudice that makes a woman pay so heavy a penalty for being better than a man. It is a glaring wrong that she must thus siiU'er because hho does not belong to the sterner sex ; it is a discrimi nation against her that is unjust. Imt she is fertile in patience and perseverance, ami the day is not far listant when her services will re- eive the recognition they deserve. Tin n will she be belter oil'; like wise the schools. John, you must remember that time and train wait for no man. Our town is growing in size, but society and education is sadly neg lected not only in our town but in the township iu general. Boys from 12 to 21 are allowed to loaf in the stores and saloons in the evening where they hear nothing that will be for the advancement of their fu ture welfare. Parents should re member that this is the wrong place for their boys, they should be at homo and prepare their lessons for the next day and by so doing they aid the teacher and work for their own mutual benefit.
