Local Institute at Adamsburg on the lOtb, Inst, was a grand success not withstanding the disagreesble weath er. The nmnber of teachers present was not what was expected but the sterm we believe to be the excuse for many of those who were absent. Fri day evening session was particularly Interesting, having opened with music, officers were elected, as follows: A. K. Gregory, Pres., II. F. Stetler, Vice Pres., Miss Annie Shirey, Seo'y. Instrumental music, by Miss Teats at the organ and Master Brain Teats with the ploolo, followed. J. F. Kel ler, then gave the " Welcome" address This was responded to by II. F. Stet ler. These addresses were well pre pared, answering the requlrments of the occasion, and reflecting credit upon the speakers. Miss Teats then rendered a vocal solo, "The Trystlng Tree." P. M. Teats, an exteacher of years gone by then rend a selection from Harbachs poems entitled "The Ualubow," Those acquainted with the collection know that they are rare productions In the Pennsylvania German dialect. The suulre read them well and afforded much amuse ment for our people who are con versant with that tongue. MifS Car rie Walker then recited a selection, entitled "Jamie," all pronounced it excelleut and credit her with prollo- ency ; the pictures were vivified witli graceful gestures and the feelings rendered totichingly. Vice Pres. Stetler then Introduced Prof. II. K. Gregory, who delivered a lecture, "Mary Queen of Hcotts." Th's was a treat to lovers of olograph isal history full of event, and graphic with the persecutions of an arbitrury rule of a jealous sovereign. Though the speaker labored under a trying defection In the throat, the address lost little of its interest. After ad journment the teachers repaired to Miildluswarth's hotel, where they fouud awaiting them a grand supper to which they did justice. Roast turkey, oysters, vegetables, cake and puddings and fruits were there to tempt and appease the appetite. Plenty was one of the principal lea tures. Mr. Middieswarth and lady have proven themselves well able to I entertain guests, none of whom went away without having expressed great pleasure. After supper all adjourned to the parlor, tnere schools and school works was the theme. County Supt. Herman, Rev. J. E Houeycutt, P. M. Teats, 11. F. Stetler and others addressed the compauy In turn until a late hour. Ou Saturday equally successful ses sions Were held. The attendence was particularly good considering the disagreeabluuess of the weather. The discussions were taken up In their order and were carefully con sidered. Many good points were shown and suggestions thrown out. County Supt. Herman, opened the subject of "Local Institutes," H. K. Greogry, followed with ' Reading," which was continued In the after noon, and Miss Sallle Burns, "Primary School Work," after these wore each spoken upon by different speakers, the Institute appoiuted the tilde and place for the next meeting, viz., the 25th Inst., at Middleburgh. The ex ercises of botli day sessions were iuterspersed with music, readings and recitations, ns was the evening session by the same persons. This variety served as a relief to the au dience, to whom the discussions were perhaps a little heavy. All agree that the institute was a success. The teachers are determined to have more aud our people are ready for another most any time. It is hoped that the weather will favor the next meet ing, and that all teachers will avail themselves of this splendid oppor tunity of beiiommlug bettor acquaint ed with the nature of their work.
