The sumao industry Iu this state has been improved wonderfully since the erection of the tanning works at this place, the only sue of the kind In the United States. A few years ago the company had to depend upon a supply of sumao from Virginia, and only received eighteen tons of the plaat from Pennsylvania. This year over 600 tons have been gathered in Pennsylvania, and purchased by Banning, Bissell & Co., the propri etors of the works. A large quantity of this has been gathered in this and neighboring counties, for which the price paid was twenty dollars a ton. The gathering Is .lone principally by women and children, who make from 00 cents to $1 a day. The leaves and mall stems of the plants are used, and it Is said the less care taken of the plant the better.
