Shirk, Dec. 1, '87 G.A.Bilger, Sep. 22,88 F. M. Spangler, Sep 22,88 The people In this county, particu larly of the west end, will remember a wagon uiceut bv the nama of e Bottsford, who has been sellinu.Koods for kinlgfc Co., of Emuiettsburg, Pa,, ine fellow canvassed this portion of tue county last week and was selling quite a number of wagons and bug gies. On Friday afternoon J. A. Enilg, of the above firm accidentally happened along here aud stopped off to see the ageut. He ut onoe learned that the fellow had been selling goods far under price some even below cost and where he took notes had them at once discounted for cash. Mr. Einig suspected that the fellow wanted to skip with the company's money and at onoe swore out a warrant before Squire School and proceeded to the Eagle Hotel, at Franklin, accom panied by Constable Renninger, arm ed with the warrant. Mr. Emig in troduced himself to Bottsford and stated his suspicions. The scoundrel at once struck for the door only to run Into the arms of the constable where he struggled like a little fly In a big spider's web. He soon "caved in," acknowledged the com, and after handing over about $175 the amount due the company, he was released. He had been selling for other firms not known to ns who will be permit ted to whistle for their money. Mr. Emlg, after the affair was over, allud ed to Renninger as a "Good ofQoer, good officer, mighty good officer." A correspondent to the Williams- port Gaulle A Bulletin writes from Sunbury under date of Sept 14 : Some three months ago a eouple of sharpers came this way and fleeced old John Hummel, of Shamokln Dam, across the river, out of $3,000 and skipped. Chase was given by detec tives, and it was supposed that they had been tracked to Erie where all trace was lost. Hummel offered three hundred dollars for their ap prehension. Last week a young man of this place, more than ordina - rlly familar with the ways and resorts of crooks of this character, went to Hummel and offered to show him his fleecers upon payment of the reward. Satisfactory arrangements were made between them and they went to New York, and In ft few hours the young man was In company with the game. He came back to the hotel and report ed to Hummel, who then secreted himself In a drinking place where he was to remain until they were brought In for identification. It was not long before In stepped the young man and the two crooks. They took a drink or two and weuk out. The young man then returned and Hum mel assured him that they were the right party. But to arrest them there would necessitate a requisition from the Governor of this bUate to bring them to trial, and after a talk over the mater it was finally agreed to come home, Hnmiuel's friend as earing him that he could deooy the rasoals Into this State by telegram. There may be further developments Jin a few days. Another oar-load of 14 Inoh No. t, pine shingles. Prloe $3.00. Call at this office. "R" stands for oysters, and G. C Gntellua has got them. There Is quite a difference of opin Ion among our portsmen In regard to the alleged changes made by the re cent legislature In the game laws Smull's Legislative Hand-book limits the time for keeping for sate deer from October I to November 80 whereas the Pamphlet Laws make no mention of such an act being passed The only acts referring to game Is the one authorizing the publication of the game laws in circular form and the other limiting the killing of quail from Ootober 15th to December 13th. As Smull's Haad-Book falls to notice the change In quail law, It Is evidently In error In limiting deer hunting to No vember 80, Instead of December 13, as the law heretofore allowed. It mat ters very little of late, anyhow, how, when or what you hunt just so you get it. In Centre county they have been "hunting huckleberries" with guns and knapsacks for the last three- mouths, and nobody is the wther ex ceptlng the tanners who take In sonic mighty thin-haired deer hides. Some assert and give good authority for it that deer are free to January 1. In this they no doubt err, but they hunt all the same. Let our legislature pass an act making all game free on Unto ber 1st, and people will understand and obey the law, but when lawyers and judges disagree, people will Inter pret the law to suit the mselve. The law as it now Is allows the killing of Deor from Oct, 1 to Deo. 15 Turkeys from Oct. 13 to Jan. 1, Quail from Oct. 13 to Deo. 15. Squirrels from Sept. 1 to Jan. 1. Rabbits from Nov. 1 to Jan. I. Pheasants from Oct. 1 to Jan. 1. Woodcock from July 4 to Jan. 1. Perhaps there are few, If any vaca tions or pusults In life, attended with more perplexity and embarrassments, than that of ptibllshlag a weekly country uewspaper. This is owing, principally, to an unjustifiable neg llgence In many in making seasonable payment for the newspaper, which Involves the printer in distressing eoiuarrassments, ir It does not prove destructive to his business, even at a time when his subscription list num oersmousamis or responsible men. This negligence, In most instances, probably proceeds from Inadvertency rather than a dishonont principle, but the effect, In either ease, Is the same on the printer. Our subnerip tion list is now extensive, and con stantly increasing, and consequantly, our weekly expenses for paper are great, whioh cannot be prooured without prompt payment In cash, be sides other heavy expenses In support lug the necessary labor of a printing establishment. The daily adding of numbers of subscribers to our list, presents, at the first view, an enoour aging prospect ; but It will prove de lusive, unless they are punctual In their remittances. We have the type paid for an en tire new dress for the Post and all we want now is a new press to make the paper what it should bo. Had we the two thousand dollars-now duo us on our books which is nearly all good, but hard to got we could at onoe proceed with our intruded improve ments, but as It Is, we must wait till this man sells his hogs, that one his corn, the next his wheat, and the bal ance shuck their onions. It Is as un pleasant for us to refer to this as It Is for the prompt paying subscriber to read it, but wa ask no more than would be justly afforded any individ uals, engaged in other occupations that is, a punctual discharge of what is due; it Is from the good will of our patrons we expect our demands, and hope that our reasonable and earnest request will aot be made in vain. To those who have paid us promptly, we tender our sincere acknowledgments. Adahriiuro. Adam Specht of this place has a grape vine which has its second crop for this year.
