The much talked of pic nlo came off In Bower's grove on Saturday and Is now a thing of the past, but we would bo derelict In our duty to pass by an occasion of such glgantio proportions, and so grand a success with only the cas toinary notice. Saturday morning dawned beauti fully, with old Bo) casting bis bright beams in all their splender, Indeed all nature smiled and the tittle warblers of the woods seemed to have a special program prepared for the oocaslon. Samuel Bowen pitched his mammoth boarding house a tent and supplies the evening before so as to be ready In the morning to supply all who at tended the gathering with anything from n brotzel up to a square meal At an early hour people commenc ed pouring into the grove and by 8 o'clock a vast crowd had assembled. vlbout thlstime Express arrived from the east and deposited quite a num ber of pleasure seekers, among whom were the heroes of many n battle, "Co. U."of Sellnsgrove, Half an hour litter Mall arrived from the west bringing with It Capt. Michael Smith Post of McClure, besides a large crowd of people who had laid dull care aside und were out for a day's enjoyment Uy 9 o clock p. m. the crowd was variously estimated at from U0OC to 4000. The forenoon was taken up iu making preliminary arrangements, a drill, and speeches by Maj. C. B. Marks, Ksq., of Lewlstown and editor Lombard of the Trihunt. Their re marks were interesting and were well lecelved by the vast audience. At a little after 1 o'clock the bag race came off with the following con testants : N. P- Hare, Frank Hure, Chas. Bibtghaus, James Cosgrovo aud Harry Specht. The coveted prize, $5, was taken by hibighaus. Next on the program was the sklrm ish drill which was carried out with military precifoness und in which all participants acquitted themselves nobly. At 3 o'clock came tho tub race, and It was the event of the day. The following entered tho race : John Biblghaus, C. F. UnfUugton, How ard Grimm, Lester Bnchuian and Otto Relchly all were attired in gay suits. All things being ready they launched their tubs In If iddlecreek which flows by the edge of the grove They first had a short practice, bnt D. T. ltlioudes soon put in nn appear anco ; and here we must not forgot to give credit to Mr. R. for his persever once and time, for t lie success greatly depended on the training they had received nt his uands. "Uondy was the command ami the five tubs were placed In line, with each man at his individual tub, "(Jo" was the next order when all got into their tabs, or tri .4 to get In. Such evolutions and back soinorsaults would liavo done credit to the "(Jroatest show on earth," but all finaly got started, but many were the "duckings" thoy re ceived beforo the prize was won. John Is'ext came the "Merry-jfo-arouud" and this was Indeed a surprise to nil as mo one hud the remotest Idea as to what it would be like, but they did not have long to wait, forsoon a noise was heard, which sounded as though all the butchers in Christendom had assembled and had Hgreed to furnish music with their own musical Instru ments. All this was occasioned by the Middleburgh Band dressed in mnsqurude costumes and each mem tier blowing a "meat -horn," closely followed by a large number of Vet erans and Sons of Veterans similarly altirod and making all kinds of nois es. This created a great deal of mer riment. Dress parade was now next on the program and was successfully gone through with. 1 lie sham battle was next in order and with this closed the program of the day. At 8:30 special trains arrived at the grove to take home the tired and dusty pleasure-seekers. Too much credit cannot be given to Capt. Kyan Post for the able program arranged and its successful termina tion. Indeed a great deal of credit is due to all who participated. The nest of order was preserved during tue entire day. Stetler's Cornet Bund furnished th mus.'o, and we can say nothing that woald add to Its advancement, for it is an organization that has a State wide reputation and their musio Is suffloent evidence of their proficiency, Chntrkville.
