While out in Treaster's Valley deer hunting on the 50th of November, the editor of the PosT visited "Treaster's shanty'' in search of a very valuable dog that belonged to our party and which was lost. A party of hunters from Harris burg had just left the shanty the day before. Anxious to get on tne trail of the dog wo hunted for evidence, and soon found a shipping tag having the address of "James H. Wells, Harris burg." We ventured to address him on the subject, stating that our dog followed what was supposed to have been a trmniftYd deer in the direction of their shanty when last. seen. It will bo remembered that it is lawful t) catch wounded deer witli dogs but not to chase healthy ones. He tumbled to our rnse so readily and wrote such a grotesque reply that we onunot retrain from poW.bliiug . It was headed "Motive Tower Depart ment, P. R. R. Co. Subject: Lost Dog," and read: T. H. Hartkr, Dear Sir: Yours of Nov. 2!th read. In renlr would say that while In Treaster's Valley quite a numlierof dogs came to our camp. In fact it seemed to be a headquarters for lost dogs- all in poor llesli, and with appetites that would bo worth a fortune to a tlyspectiu person. They put in their time watching sotno beef that we had to hang very high, and lighting over Imaglnery pieces of it We fed them as well as our commis sary would permit of, and hunters coining along would ask if they wero all ours, and on being answered in the negative would appropriate such as suited them. We tried to take the whole lot out hunting witli us not as you fully understand to mn tlrer but .imply to find the wounded ones of which there seemed to be a goodly number running around loose but they quietly but very firmly refused to go. Their appetite for beef seemed to have completely overcome their enthusiasm for hunting wimnikd dftr, and they seemed to be firmly Impress ed with the belief that sooner or later gravitation would bring that beef within their reach. Those dogs were quite a study, and vou could rend In their honest faces that they had nev er, or hardly ever, ruu anything but wounded deer. I have been told by resitlents of that section that their dogs are carefully taught to avoid the tracks of limlthu di.tr, and that doits are sometimes shot for running sound ileer provided the clogs were from some where else. The balance of the letter contained the desired information, and convinc ed us that Mr. Wells-like all the oth er rauroau men we nave met Is a first-class gentleman and a royal good fellow. When they attempted to let down the hammers, they realized that they had lost the use of their fingers, for two of the guns were discharged. At this junc ture they were startled by some one shouting from the underbrush In front of them, "Wos het dler for I" The voice was that of William Thomas, alias Welriolc or Bishop, and he had been struck by tho load from the gun first discharged, one shot having iodired In his thigh and another In a finger.
