' $50,000,000 for Good 1 In the popular absorption in the great war it is to be hoped that the voters of Pennsylvania vill not overlook two important rrosposed constitutional amend ments that ;vill be submitted to them at next week's election. One, of State-wide interest, authorizes the Commonwealth to i3sue bonds to the amount of $50,000,000 for the purpose of rebuilding and improving its highways. Regarding the de sirability of such work there can be no question. Five years ago, when a similar amendment was submitted to the people, it was j 1 rejected because of well-justifiod i suspicion regarding the powers that be. Since then the pcoplo , i have been more generally eJ- ' ucated up to the importance of good roads, and the State Hih-, way Department has lived down ( the odium that formerly at-i tached to it. Pennsylvania cannot afford to1 lag in the improvement of -Raj highways. New York has spent f much more than $50,000,000 in! such work. Illinois will vote next week on a proposed bond issue of $00,000,000 for good roads.Jand nearly all the States of the Union are taking action along similar lines. The current revenues of the Commonwealth are not great enough to justify the appropriation from them of sums in keeping with the mag nitude of the work to be done. " The necessary improvement can, therefore, only be secured in a reasonable time through the issue of bonds, and in the pay ment of these, as well as in the enjoyment of the modernized highways, posterity will bear its share with the present genera tion. Our roads are much bet ter now than they were five years ago, but the improvement does not proceed fast enough. Rapid progress can only be as sured by means of a generoP3 issue of bonds, in the benefits from which all sections of the State will participate. Bear these facts in mind next Tuesday, and vote for the pro posed amendment. It will help to pull Pennsylvania out of the mud and made this a better State to live in. 1 charge !:; .' u, -.lia.l, but a US. nc . r docs. T.ie '.vn;e man la? to ft Yo'jrj;ia:..1 ".'!').
