The proverbs of savages are shrewd and pithv. fho Basutos say, "The thief catches himself;" the Yorulus, "Ho who injures another injures himself;" the Wolofs, "Be fore healing others heal yourself." In Accra they say, "Nobody is twice a fool;" among the Oji, "The moon does not grow full in a day;" "The poor man has no friends." A Fash to proverb says, "A feather does not stick without gum." Others are, "A razor cannot shave itself," "Cross tho river before you abuse the crocodile," "Perseverance al . ways triumphs," "The thread fol lows the needle," and "Preparation is better than afterthought.' West minster Gazette. Thought Well of Themeelvee. Cibbon wrote in his duiry: "I am tho greatest historian that ever lived. No one can equal me in this direction." Victor nngo wrote to Bismarck: "The giant greets tho giant, the foe the foe, tho friend the friend. I hate thee furiously because thou hast humbled Franco. I love thee because I am greuter than thou art." And Wordsworth said of the "swan of Avon:" "Thcro is an im mensity of trick in all ho wrote. If I had a mind I could write exactly like Shakespeare." A Grudging Spirit Much depends on the way a thing is done. An act which might be taken as a kindness if done in a generous spirit, when done in a grudging spirit may be felt as harsh and even cruel. When Ben Jonson lay ill in poverty tho king sent him a paltry message, accompanied by a gratuity. The sturdy, pain stricken poet's reply was: "I suppose, he sent me this oecause I live in an alley. Tell him his soul lives in an alloy." -Samuel Smiles. A Change. "That young Stebbins boy sayi he's goin to the city to make a name for himself," said the village gossip. "I don't blame hira a mite," said the village postmaster. "I always said his parents had no right to sad dle a youngster with such a name as Adoniram Ebenezer." St. Louis rost-Dispatch. One Disadvantage. Potts It in a grout deal better to own your own home and not have to pay rent, isn't it? Lotts Well, yes, ijr a general way it is. but it has'itu dimidvan- tages. A fellow can't go round driv ing nails anywhero he pleases in the woodwork of his own home, ou know. Boston Trnnscript. Subsciber for the "News'' only f!51ayer JANUARY HONOR ROLL. Names of New Subscribers and Others Who Paid Subscription During the Month of December. The News has "sure some" Honor Roll this month, for whii-h it takes pardonable pride, and it greatly appreciates thU evidence of loyalty and support to the Fulton County News. The subscription price of the News is now $1 50 a year in ad vance. The high price of everything connecttd uiih the produc tion of a newspaper is such that no man can get out a weekly the size of the Fulton County papers at a d llar a year without a financial loss on every copy. There are a fe.v tender-foot publish ers that are struggling along in hope that something will turn up by which they will be relieved the unpleasant task of increasing the price. But business is business. When the time cornea that farmers cannot afford to sell wheat at a dollar a bushel, exgs at 12 cents a dozen, butter at 10 cents a pound, ham at 8 cents hay at $5 ton, they just don't do it, and they ask more money. 1'heie is nothing unreasonable about the advance in the subscription price of newspapers, and wide-awake publishers everywhere are advanc ing the price. Prior to 1899 everybody that took a. Fulton County newspaper paid $1.50 a year for a paper only half the size of the present pa pers and thought nothing of it They did this when it took more of every kind of produce a farmer had to sell to make $1.50. Seventeen year ago the Editor of the News gave the people of Fulton County a newspaper at a dollar a year, and the price has re mained at a dollar since that time. But now conditions have chang ed. The paper, upon which the printing is done, cost at that time 2 cents a pound; now it costs 6i and still advancing. Ink has gone from 4 to 14 cents, type is out of sight, and still advancing. There is simply nothing else to do, than put up the price or get out of business. And just a word more in this cpnnection. We waited as long as we possibly could to make the change, in the hope that the war would be over or that something would happen by which prices of other things would come down. It has been with mature deliber ation that the price has been advanced. And now that it has been done We Want To Be Fair. It would not be honorable to charge one person a dollar, and another a dollar and a half. So kindly Do Not Ask Us To Let You Stay In At The Old Price. Of course, you may have been a playmate of the editor's grandfather or you may have made chestnut whistles for the editor when he was a boy; you may have been one of those very much appreciat ed friends who gave the News a boost wheh it started and when the editor very much needed friends; but You Would Lose Re spect For Him, if you knew he let somebody else have the paper for a dollar, and charged you a dollar and a half. If you find that you cannot really afford to pay $1.50 just tell us kindly to discontinue the paper and we promise mot to feel sore about it The editor has to do the best he can to make a living and he wants to give everybody else the same chance. Look over this list and if you find that you are not credited up right kindly notify us at once. Adams, Maude Winter Aiketn, Mrs. Cora Alters, T. II. Akers, lion. C. R. Akers, Jaa. S. Alexander, B.
