To "make a living" is by no means all for which we should live in this world. When we go about making a living in such manner that there is no time left tor self improvement, and the mother has no time to devote to the children to instill into their sensitive minds the principles that only a mother can teach, we are by no means fulfilling the purpose for which life was given us. Use all the labor saving ma chinery possible;but keep a proper balance between that for the farm, and that for the household. Indeed, the very first labor-saving device that should be install ed is one to furnish running wa ter in the kitchen. The kitchen is the engine room of the farm. If the "engineer" be worked to the limit, some day something like a monkey wrench is going to fall into the family social machi nery, and there will be a wreck. Such a disaster could happen from scores of causes. Ask any good, faithful kitchen engineer what they might be. Ask her if running water at the sink could lessen the danger, and she will answer, "Yes, by more than half." Take her word for it, and sacrifice something to secure such good accident insurance. Ee honest with your conscience and recall to mind who it was that in stilled into your character any thing of good that you may now possess your mother. We may read in novels of slave mothers who raised noble sons and daugh ters, but they are the exception. If, by reason of slavery, mother minds are dwarfed, we may ex pect a generation of dwarfed minds in so far as early child hood impressions influence future action. Exceptions only prove the rule. The average child re flects the teachings of the mother. Times have changed. Help in the household and on the farm is no longer going begging for po sitions. The old kitchen pump is as far behind the times as the flail and the flax heckle. The strain on the womenfolks is greater than when the house was full of big girls, aunts, and grand mothers who did their share of chores. Summer Normal at McConnellsburg.
