One of the Chambersburg Mo tor club while recently touring through the northeastern part of Pennsylvania stopped for lunch at the Indian Queen hotel at Stroudaburg. There was much remark made there of an insect which none present could lienti- ty. The bug was much the general shape of a wasp, but nearly twice as long, with very long, rather coarse antennae and long black legs. The specimen observed was busily engaged in laying eggs under the bark of a dead tree stump which was preserved for purely ornamental purposes. To the writer not being an en tomologist, the species was quite strange and he determined to col lict the specimen and send it to Dr. Surface, for identification. In bis usual illuminating man ner the doctor sends the follow ing information: Daar Sir: We have received the insect which you sent to us, and which you supposed was a borer in the bark of a dead tree. 1 hasten to inform you that it is called the Long-tailed Ichneu mon, and the scientific name is Megarhyssa lunator. The im portant fact about it is that it is not a borer injurious to trees, but it is a parasite laying its eggs in the holes of the bark, where they hatch, and attack the real depredators and destroy them. It is thus a beneficial insect, and where it is abundant, as you say, it will made its good services manifest by preserving the tree which are evidently very badly infested by a destroying borer. Every effort possible should be made to have these insects 'pre served rather than destroyed. They insert their long, knife like tails or ovipositors into the tree and guide their eggs to the de sired place by this means. When they are fastened upon a tree they cannot readily escape, if seen, many persons ignorantly crush them, with tlje belief that they were destroying insects which were boring into and de stroying the tree. By all means preserve the Ichneumon Flies, as they are among the most benefi cial insects and contribute great ly toward suppressing the devas tating hordes of insect pests. No Need to Stop Work.
