A union service was held in the
auditorium of the Public School
buildiug last Sunday morning,
at which time Kev. Clifford E.
Hays, of the Lutheran church,
preached the annual memorial
sermon. The auditorium which
has a seating capacity of more

appreciated. liev. John M.

A store has its character just as men have. The sensationalist ancHakir are looked upon with sus
picion. Business, upon business bases, is what the public demands to-day. The store is evi
dence of the success of up-to-date twentieth century merchandising. A progressive
store, constantly forging ahead; and in spite of big claims, loud advertising, and asser
tion of others, proving, demonstrating daily that values, such as offered here are not
found elsewhere. Here are factsl Here are figures! Draw your own conclusions!
A Day's Outing.
A touring party composed of
Mrs. E. li. McClara, Mrs. C. B.
Stevens, Miss Emily V. Great
head, and Miss Mary Piltman,
left McConnellsburg, early last
Thursday morning for a day's
outing early enough to bo at
the top of the great Tuscarora
mountain to witness the first
peep of the sun as it sent forth a
shower of scintillating beams
from the eastern horizon. This
beautiful view, coupled with the
invigorating ozone-laden atmos
phere of an ideal early summer
morning, made them feel well re
paid for the small sacrifice of
mamug the ascent at so early an
hour. But they could not tarry;
there were other places to visit
other sights to see, and onward
they went until the hostonc town
of old Fort Loudon was reached.
Aftei having filled their pockets
with Indian arrows, and colonial
relics picked up on the site of the
old fort, they boarded the South
Peun and onward they went
and they went. The Nkws could
not tell all that tho party saw
during the day without leaving
some of the medicine locals out;
henco our readers must bo con
tent with the knowledge that they
returned to McConuellsburg, at
uine o'clock on the evening of
that day. Some of the places
visited were: Mercersburg,
Lemaster, Williamson, Stone
Bridge, Marion, Chambersburg,
(Juilford Springs, Kaullmans,
Greeucastle, Minor, and Maugans
villa.

Our old friend Jacob Cnder,
or we should say our young
friend, for he is not as old as the
editor, called to see us while in
town Monday. Jacob has been
in the service of Uncle Sam dur
ing the past nineteen years as
Star lloute mail contractor,
seventeen years of that time hav
ing the route between Three
Springs and Hopewell via Wells;
Tannery. During the I last two
years, or since the establishing
of free rural delivery service be
tween Uopewell and Wells Tan
nery, and from Three Springs,
Jacob's route extends only be
tween New Grenada and Wells
Tannery, a distance of seven
miles. But Mr. Crider is happy
just the same; for Uncle Sam
pays him within one hundred and
twenty dollars a year as much
for the seven miles as when the
route was more than twice as
long.
