county's oldest physician died
at bis home at Fayettville last
Saturday night. He was born in
Baltimore in 1831.
Geofge B. Mock last Saturday

of McConnellsburg from the
heirs of tne late Geo. C. Scott,
for mue thousand dollars.
Rev. Baxter, of Fannettsburg,
pi eached in the Presbyterian
church in this place last Sunday
morning and evening, much to
the delight and edification of the

Mr. W. H. Fgely, of Licking
Creek township comes forward
with a tomato that measures 17
inches in greatest circumference,

Rev. Oliver S. Metzler, pastor
of the Mulberry street M. E.
church, Wuliamsport, Pa., was
called to this county on account
of the serious illness of his father
John G. Metzler, of Harrisonville.
Rev. D. R. Ellis, the distin
guished naval warrior and preach
er and the last living survivor of
the crew of the famous first iron
clad Monitor of Rebellion fame,
died at Annville, Pa., last Friday,
aged 68 years.
Geo. E. Fleming, esq., Editor
and Proprietor of the Mercers
burg Journal, drove over to this
place on Saturday to make in
quiry as to the possibility of a
good buckwheat crop. Sorry we
could not give him more encoura
gement. H. W. Karper, manager of the
Real Estate Department in the
Chambers burg Trust Company,
was in town over last Sunday.
Mrs. Karper has been spending
several days among friends In
this county.
Several hayseeds complain that
they were stung at Cole's circus

One man is said to have lost $80

HAD BAD ACCIDENT.
Traction Engine Cylinder Explode. Can
lat a Runaway.
Last Friday morning, as Ellis
Mcllheunv was coming up the
hill at Richmond with his thresh
ing outfit, the cylinder head of
his traction engine blew out, and
the engiuestarted to run back.
This broke the tongue off the Sep
arator and upset the water Unk,
while the engine, from which the
engineer jumped, ran to the side
and upset down an embankment.
Behind the outfit, Harry Mc
Curdy and his son, from Fannetts
burg, were driving, and the ex
plosion and wreck frightened
their horse, which started to run
off. He upset the wagon, throw
ing out Mr. McCurdy and upset
ting the wagon on his young son.
It was only after hard work that
the wagon was finally raised so
that the boy, who was severely
injured, could be gotten out.
The engine was pretty badly
wrecked and both Mr. McCurdy
and his son are injured, though
the latter the more severely.

Senator Knox and his son Phi
ander, Jr., while touring in Swit
zerland in an autimobile met with
an accident last Monday. The
machine skidded and ran over a
steep bank into a ditch. The oc
cupants were not seriously in
jured, but the machine had to be
shipped to Paris for repairs.
Miss Mary E. Bracken, of
Hollidaysburg, has successfully
passed the examinations which
entitle her to practice law before
the Supreme, Superior and coun
ty courts of this State. Miss
Bracken is the first woman law
yer admitted to practice in Blair
county. She is a graduate of
Dicaiuson Law School at Carlisle.,

Preliminary Meeting.
The preliminary meeting of the
teachers of Ayr, Uelfust, Brush Creek
and Licking Creek townships, was
held at Needniore, September 1st.
About thirty-three teachers were pres
ent The meeting was culled to order
by Superintendent Lamberson, and
Thomas Truax was appointed chair
man The following questions were
discussed by the teachers, Prof. Pal
mer, and Superintendent Lamberson :
li Preliminary Work. 2. Libraries:
Their Importance; Methods of estab
lishing them, etc. High class works
should be procured for the advanced
grades. 3. How should a teacher
spend his time when not engaged in
actual teaching 'i Teachers should
take some exercise between four and
seven o'clock in the evening. 4. Tho
value of a good school to a commun
ity and vice versa. Prof. Palmer said
that teachers should look out for bad
behavior outside ot school. Discip
line stands first in a good school. The
best of discipline Is reached through
good teaching. 5. What should a
teacher read t Make a study of poet
ry with the pupils. Study and apply
psychology while teaching. (. The
teacher's opportunity for improve
ment. More time must bo spent by
tho teacher in tho study of Algebra.

on the local institute work in the dif
ferent townships. The committees
were as follows :

The Magsam brothers, George
and John, east of town have a
man who I as had, he says, six
teen years experience in digging
coal, prospecting for coal on their
land. They are blasting the
slate rock which they say,
every indication of striking coal.

be successful. They say they
are determined to keep at work
until it is definitely settled wheth
er or not there is coal on their

Mrs. Geortte Cordon, of Ever
ett, visited in' the home of William
Fix, and of Frederic Gress last
week. From tho latter place she
went toGreeucastle and returned
home the last of the week.
