LADIES' SKIRTS I LADIES' WAISTS it The editorial comments of the leading newspaper ( ot the couu try upon the results of the two great political conventions, the one at Chicago, the ether at Den ver, show conclusively that this is to be rather a decent campaign so far as the press is"coucei ned. That is to say, Republican edi tors, Democratic editors and In dependent editors agree that tin presidential candidates are men of good personal character, so that they are to he judged by the policies they uphold and the prin ciples they propose to put into elTect. It is generally agreed that Taft is a mau of stainless character and that in this respect he his a worthy rival iu Bryan. Upward of 150,000,000 barrels and circular wooden packages are manufactured in the United States annually. Few people, ex cept those whose business it is to know, realize the extent ojfihe cooperage industry in this coun try. The heaviest demand comes from the cement business. The Hour business ranHs next, closely followed by sugar. Containers for fence staples, bolts, nuts, nails, and packages for roasted coffee, spices, crockery, fruits, and vegetablos, follow in the or der named, while glass manufac tures, baking powder companies, liquor distillers, and candy, to bacco, and cheese packers are big users of barrels. The demand for barrels for molasses, oil, lard, and pork, is also enormous, while dry paint, glue, snuff, oatmeal, screws, castings, and general hardware articles, annually in crease the demaud on the cooper age supply. While the amount expended for barrels can be quite closely estimated for a given year, it is not possible to say how many barrels are in actual use. Tne life of a barrel is put dowu at one year by the trade, but this is far from true. A majority of oarrels are used many times. They lie gin as sugar and Hour barrels, and are then sold to the farmer for shipping his produce to the market. It may be that they are returned to him several times carrying potatoes to the market on the first trip and tobaccn or lettuce on the next, each cargo being lighter in weight than the previous one, owing to the weak eued condition of the barrel. Finally, the barrel may serve out its lifework as a refuse receptacle, and in the end can be useJ for fuel. Farm At Private Sale.
