Ask almost any intelligent man why iron rusts, and tie will prob ably explain at tedious length that it is all due to the oxygen of the air. Ever since chemistry became a more or less exact sci ence, winch was over a century ago, that theory has been gener ally accepted. Now an Am' rl can physicist, Dr. Cushmau, comes aloug aud annuouucos that rusting is really due to electrici ty. Dr. Cushman started his re searches witti the object of dis covering some method of pre venting the corrosion of wire fences a subject of vital interest to farmers, lie achieved more than he anticipated. He lound that the first attack on the iron is made bv hydrogen iuthe form of oxceedingly small particles, but not as the text-books havi laugh t U3, by c xy gen. This is in agreement with the modern theo ry that many substances, when they are dissolved in water, are dissociated into ions, or minute particles smaller even than atoms, all carrying electrical charges. Even pure water contaius a cer ta n number of these. Acid im purities multiply the hydrogeu ions and strengthen their, in their corrosive effect upon :ron. The action is purely electric, and in volves an exchange of the electric relations between the hydrogen and the Iron. Dr. Cushman dis covered that active oxidizing agents, such as chromate and 01 chromato of potash, prevent rust ing by safeguarding; it against at tack by the hydrogen ion. By immersing ine iron in a concen trated s lution of bichromate ac id, and then washing and wiping it, the metal is rendered passive, so that it becomes capable of re sistiog electro chemical attack. The discovery of the real cause of ratting and of its prevention, has great industrial significance It means that a method has at last been found for protecting structural irouwork and machin ery.
