William Martin, a Civil War veteran of Fort Littletou, had his right arm amputated at the elbow last week, the operation being performed at his home by Drs. J. II. Devor, 11. W. Ramsey and David Maclay. During the Civil War, at the battle of Ferdericks burg, he was so badly wounded that it was necessary for him to have his left arm amputated. He lay on the battlefield, wounded, without attention, from a Friday until Monday, and withal with stood this test on his physical en. durance. For a few years after the war he was engaged in farm ing but in recent years has lived retired in Fort Loudon. Recent ly he sustained an injury to his arm. Some of us have to go as far as 35 miles to the county seat, and get only $1.50 and mileage, which makes $5.70. We Have to pay our hotel bill out of this, which leaves us very little for ourselves. We have to do all the running after bad characters, but the good law gives no salary, as it does the County Commis sioners and District Attorney.
