It bits beoon quite a wlnlc siiico "your scribe" furnished any items from this place. We have no apology, in particular, to offer, as you know we all have to pass through the gronn cucumber, the grren corn, and the green apple, season, which, with the following of the dog days, usually cuds with the old style "rake oil" and puts a correspondent out of business giving him, as it were, his long sought-for vacation in the bushes while ye editors are wallowing in the sands on the beach of the roaring Atlantic. Many items of interest have gone by, and wo find only a few that are not tainted with age. IJere they are : Our village blacksmith, Georire Shafer, had the misfortune a cou ple of week's ago to get his hand too near a buzz saw, which led him to conclude that it would be a good time to take a vacation. So he and his wife and sou lioy and daughter Edith made a visit among friends in Mount Union, Shirleysburg, and Shade Cap, ar riving home last Sunday. Miss Verna, who has been in Mount Union since last April, is now home. John Miller, who had been at Boston and New York during the summer, now home. Ralph W. Cunningham, wife, and son "Billy Flick" are spend ing a few weeks at the home of Ralph's parents, Mr. and Mrs, L. L. C. James A. McDonough and his lady friend, Maye Cunningham, visited the city of Harrisburg a couple of days. William J. Crider visited his home and took in Walnut drove' camp, returning tolas home at Turtle Creek, Pa., last Saturday. He is a reliable employe of the Westinghouse people. Frank Thomas, who lias been sick since last February, is still unable for duty. Our music teacher who could so nicely play "Turkey in the Straw," has now a later and bet ter piece entitled "Turkey in the Corn Crib." Who can guess what the result will he t A birthday surprise party was given Ritner Black on the occa sion of his having readied his ma jority a few evenings ago at the home of his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Jacob Black. A large num ber of hi young friends were present; and after refreshments were served, the evening was de lightfully spent in innocent par lor games. Ritner received a nice lot of gifts. Robert Marly, Harry Foster, Glover Horton, and Harry l id wards are all in Altoona. Our townsman and Comrade F. G. Mills, has a new name for the disease which many pocket books have. It is 'Apathy," or "Wasting Away." Just to show what a few earn est women can do, 1 want to tell you that last spring the ladies in the vicinity of Wells Valley M. H. church and Find, organized a Ladies' Aid Society, their object being to raise money for church purposes. They started by hav ing apron auctions, suubounet so cials, etc. Later they hit upon a ju 'it-patch arrangement. Twenty-five patches were distributed among the members, and names to be worked on the patches in silk at ten cents a name were so licited. Upon the return of tLe patches it was found that they averaged three dollars each, and when the patches were joined and the quilt finished they were offered ten dollurs for the quilt. This scheme brought them 'Houj li money to buy a new IU ley organ lor the church and J'ave a nice Utluci; in tho trras-u- y. '1 l.ese people are to be com mended for their enterprise, and , we would .suggest that the good , ladies of X. G. take up the cue. lnyk at the church nt Bethel, i The root lets in alike the sun I shine and the rain. T ie organ plays a different tune from the one tiie choir sings. In fact the greatest service it performs is the providing a place for the hab itation of mice. A few Sundays ago, your scribe remained a few minutes after service at the church, invaded the mouse nest in the "bowels" of the organ, and succeeded iu destroying seven of the pesky little rodents, to say nothing of those that escaped. How nice it would be to report a work done by a "Ladies' Aid" at New Grenada. We have the la dies; we have the aid. Who will move t A Ul'AR.AMTiXD CLKIi l ()K PILLS. The boy is clear out of sight. Three men have under taken to cut the stalk down with axes and savo the boy from star vation, but it grows so fast that tli.-y can't hack twice in the same place.
