Jules Ashland has a daughter, Marie, three years old. Mrs. Ashland, ill since Marie's birth, left Marie to the care of Mary, a Finnish nurse girl. Recently the mother's health improved, and then she wanted her daughter. She became alarmed when Ma rie's babble could not be under stood. Fearing that she was afflicted with some ailment of the throat, she summoned an expert on dis eases of that part. The doctor came Saturday. It happened that he is able to understand the Finnish language. No sooner had little Marie been presented than there followed a great tirade in Finnish from the baby mouth against the mother. The child was as mad as a hor net She did not hesitate to tell the doctor so in the only tongue that she knew Finnish. Her mamma wouldn't talk to her, and her little heart was almost broken. She had been associat ing so long with the Finnish nurse girl that she learned that language and no other. The nurse girl is looking for a job. TOOK RAZOR TO CHURCH. Woman Mistook Husband' Safety Shav er tor a Fan. New York, July 17. Mrs. Eg bert H. Terry of East Moriches, N. Y., went to church armed with a safety razor. She did not carve any one, nor did the sight of the razor cause alarm. The congre gation laughed when she flour ished it, for she mistook it for a fan. The day was warm, and Mrs. Terry absentmindedly rais ed her hand, which clutched the handle of the razor, and flourish ed the implement about her face as if it had been a fan. There was a subdued laugh in nearby seats. Then a friend leaned over and called Mrs. Terry's atteution to what she had in her hand. "1 picked it up hastily from my bureau, as I was late in start ing," explained Mrs. Terry later, "and never noticed it was a razor until I was laughed at." A Grim Tragedy is daily enacted, in thousands of homes, as death claims, in each one, another victim of consump tion or pneumonia. But wnen coughs or colds are properly treated, the tragedy is averted. F. O. Huntly, of Oaklandon, Ind., writes; "My wife had the con sumption, and three doctors gave her up. Finally she took Dr. King's New Discovery for Con su mption, coughsand colds, which cured her, and to day she is well and strong." It kills the germ of all diseases. When Mrs. Starr proposed ma king ice cream on the evening ot July 19th, ner unthinking spouse did not mistrust anything only that she was ice cream hungry, and as he was fond of it too, he began to turn the' crank with right good will, and when just be fore it was done a couple of his neighbors families came he still thought nothing, as they often came for ice cream, but when the next family came he began to "think queer things," and as the next ones came it suddenly dawn ed on his bram that it was his 3sth birthday, and when thev had arrived to the number of 33, they were called in and served with all the ice cream and cake they could eat, enjoying themselves until near mid-iiight when they depart ed wishiug their host many more anniversary mile stones, and all voting that they had enjoyed be ing there. It was about an inch long and very sharp. Miss Ina Showalter spent Sun day at Sherman Clevenger's. No False Claims. The proprietors of Foley's Hon ey and Tar do not advertise this asa "sure cure for consumption." Nesbit, for western Pennsylvania, shows that the sur vivors of the Spanish-American war are preventing a rapid de cline in the number of pension ers of the government. There are 507 pensioners who were dis abled in the Spanish war, and there are 1 25 widows and depend ent relatives now on the pension rolls. They are classed the same as pensioners ot the civil war. About 40 per cent, of these were received during the past year. The total disbursements from the Pittsburg ottice for the past year were $f;,458,G75.2.'!, which shows that Uncle Sam is caring for many families of this section. About Sl'MJOO of this amount was distributed to people living in every state and territory of this government. Some of the former Pennsylvania pensioners are living in Alaska, Porto Itico and the Philippines. The total gains on the pension roll are L 538 of which number the Spanish American war pensioners, wid ows and depei den), relatives fur nish a large part.
