JAMKS H. lll.Nl'.IHU.l.AU. Mav 13. 1!05. The Next President. Speculating on presidential nominations three or four years in advance is a rather useless di version, for it often takes but a short time to completely punc ture a boom. A few months ago Elihu Root was a favorite in many quarters for the Republican nom ination in 1908 and his praises were loudly sung, but already he has been practically eliminated as a possibility because he has plunged iuco a corporation prac tice at the bar which will lose him the support of the people who will elect the next president as they selected the last one. It would be a safe bet that the next Republican nominee and as a mutter of course, the next pres ident, will come from the Middle West, from Ohio, Indiana, Illi nois, or Iowa. Taft, Foraker, Fairbanks, Cannon and Shaw are already on the field, and while either or all of them, like Root, might soon be eliminated from the equation, the odds are in fa vor ol the presidency going back to the West at the close of Roose velt's term Altoona Gazette.
