About the middle of June, it was ordered to Martinsburg, where, upon its ar rival, it was temporarily armed with muskets, and under com mand of Major Troxel, was as signed to the infantry brigade, com n i ; n dod by Colond Mulligan, who soon after led his forces to Leetowu, to meet the threatened advanceofthereoeKienoral Early. On the morning of the 3d of July, tho brigade was furiously attack ed by a largely superior force. With the more determined brav ery, Mulligan's little baud stood its ground, and for eight hours held the euemy at bay, keeping open the way of retreat for Sigel, at Martinsburg, and thereby as suriug the safety of the army and its material. The detachment. though lighting as infantry, in which it was little schooled, show ed such spirit and determination, that Colonel Mulligan placed it at the fore front, whore it repelled repeated assults of the enemy.- On the Oih aud 7th it was engag ed in a series of skirmishes on Marylaud Heights, and for some days afterward was on tho march with the troops, then retiring, before a superior force of the en emy under Karly, advancing to wards Marylaud, with the design of elTectiug the capture of the Na tional Capitol. On tho K.th it again crossed the Potomac, and moved through Loudon county to .Snickers (Jap, having, on the 1 -.i i ii in, a snarp engagement at Snicker's Ferry. It then advanc ed to Winchester, but on the "I'd, was ordered back to the camp at Pleasant Valley, for tho purpose of being mounted and thoroughly equipped as cavalry. Ou tho xih of Angus, it left camp, and join ing the force of (Jeueral Torbert, led the advance of Oeneral Sheri dan, who had just then beeu put in command ol tho entire army in the Shenandoah Valley. Ou tho '.Uh, it camu up with aud joined in the attack of the rebel rear guard capturing ten men and lifteen horses. On the L'oth, under coin maud of Colonel Lowell, it covered the retreat of Coneral Sheridan from Cedar Creek. On tiio L'lst, under tho command of Lieuten ant Colonel Greenfield, it took part in an engagmeut at Kerns- town, where it displayed great steadiness and grill mtry, repell ing repeated assaults of a larger superior force. On tho three fol lowing days it was warmly en gaged atOpequanand IJerryville, and on the 2,'Hh at Charlestown, sustaining considerable loss, Cap tain Tnomas D. French and Lieu tenant F. li. Smith, being among the wounded. Ou tho tlClh, under a severe artillery lire, it partici pated in an attack upon tho ene my's iosnion, charging his Hues, and capturing a number of pris oners. Major Myers was severe ly woun Jed in this engagement. Soon afterwards the detachment wasordered tollagerstown, where it was united with the detachment which had been left at Cumber land, in tho April preceding. The latter at this time under com mand of Major Work, had been in constant and active service dur ing tho entire summer, taking part in the campaign of General IJunter against Lynchburg, and serving thein brigadecom mandod by Colonel Higgins, under Sigel and Crook, with whom it waa ac tively engaged in tho battles of Market aud kerustown, on the 23 th of July. It subsequent ly joined the division of General Averell, and witb him made a forced march in pursuit of Mc Cautdand, after tho burning of Chambersburg, coming up with him at Moorefield, where a deci sive battle wug fought, and tho rebel leader was put to rout, los ing many meu and all his guns.
