The laughable farce the "Deestrict Skule" will be rendered. Hon. Peter Morton broke ground yesterday for his new barn, and the work will be pushed to completion as rapidly as possible. The Judge will have his hunds full this summer; for, in addition to tho barn, he expects to burn 100,000 brick and have them cool enough to handle by the middle of July. Mr. Kobert Smith, of this place,, re ceived a telegram informing him of the deuth of his brother William at Washington, Pa., on Tuesday morn ing. William was the oldest of tho John H. Smith children; and, now, Hobert is the only one of tho boys left, and Mrs. Thomas Hamil and Mrs. Maggie Baxter the only girls. Our esteemed contemporary, the Val ley Spirit, of G'hambersburg, came out just before Easter with a bran new dress on, and more news than you could shake a stick at; and it is wear ing its now suit every day now.. Con sidering the great advance in tho cost of printing materlul, we can scarcely see how our neighbor can be so reck less. Reference was made a week or two ago to the fact that a call had been extended Dr. W. A. West to become pastor of the McConnollsburg and Greenhlll churches. When Presby tery was reached last leek It was found ho had a call from a congregation near Carlisle at a much better salary than the Fulton county charge could afford to puy; and, in addition, a nice parsonage. Dr. West felt that duty pointed toward McConnellsburg, and he decided to come here. On Monday, George, seven-year-old son of Mr. and Mrs. Cyrus Kelly of this place, was riding with Mr. Kelso In the latter's creamery wagon, when, in attempting to get out tho lad fell to tho ground on his face, and tho hind wheel of the wagon passed over both the little fellow's legs, bruising them badly, but fortunately breaking no bones. Ho was carried homo and Dr. Dalbey called, under whose care lie is getting along nicely. Last Thursday evening, Kobert Cutehall, who lives on the George Mc Quado farm, was driving a two-horso farm wagon, from his home across to Win. F. Catchall's on the James W. Kendall farm. In tho wugon bed was a box in which was a pig, und Hobert was sitting on the box driving. Going down tho luno by J. C. Brew er's, a front wheel dropped unexpect edly into a chuck, and the momentum throw Hobert violently out over tho wagon wheel onto a pile of stones at tho side of tho road. Ho was pretty badly broken up, and has been sulfur Ing great puin since. It is u wonder ho wasn't killed. A Horrible Outbreak. . Our hustling merchant und Charley Wink had quite an ex perience one day last week. It came about thus: Wink came in possession of a small cow-boy pony, lie brought it over to the merchant and swapped it for a irgo young heifer. When Char ley undertook to take his heifer home, the trouble began. They began acting cow-boy, probably, because the pony reminded them of that. Charley threw tho lasso and caught the heifer by the head. She plunged and reared but they succeeded in getting some distance when the noose slipped, and the heifer was lose; but our merchant was ready for any emergency. Abandoning the isso part of tho performance, ho succeeded in getting hold of her caudal appendage, and by wrap ping the brush around his hand, by Herculean strength he held the heifer until Charley adjusted tho rope, and they went on their way without any further trouble. Mack says the muscles of his arm have been a little sore since. Laura Deshoug has returned home after teaching a successful term of seven mouths at Cedar Lane. Florence Wink is going to spend a few days in the vicinity of Needmore. Our old frieud Reuben Iianu is quite ill. Don, IJlanche, and Joanna Mor ton of near McConnellsburg, spent Easter in this vicinity tho latter two visiting their cousins Lou and Nell Morton, the former assisting Came Warden Milton Mellott to protect the dears. Isaac Fink is in hard luck. Recently fire got started in some mysterious way, burned over one of his Holds, and destroyed a lot of fence. Had it not been for tho timely arrival of several neigh bors, much damage would, in all probability, have been done. Shortly ufter this happened, some dogs fell on his sheep one night and killed fourteen nice lambs out of a Hock of nineteen. About twenty-live of our able bodied men are going to Virginia to peel bark. Judge Morton made a Hying trip through this section last Monday buying cows and hogs.
