For years the morning train from Halls to To wandn has used the Lehigh Valley tracks from Satterfield. There was a ret urn train in.the a fternoon ovet the same route. The W. & N. The .leturn trip was made in two hours. Be fore the trip McCormick installed a new engine in the three-wheeler. The new mechanism worked to perfection. CLAUDE ALLEN GUH.TY Is Convicted of Murder in the First Degree Wytheville, Va., July 2i).~ Claude Allen, one of the Hillsville outlaws, was on Saturday convict ed of murder itt the first degree foi the killing of commonwealth attor ney, William M. Foster. At/a former trial he was found guilty of murder in the second de gree for the killing of Judge Thorn ton L. Massie. Claude Alien is the second one of the Allen Clan to be convicted of first degree murder, his father, Floyd Allen, being the other. "When he learned that he must pay the penalty for his crime in the electric chair the prisoner broke down and wept bitterly, as did also his fiancee, who was with him in the court roCJn. It was the first time he had displayed the first sign of emotion since his trial began. While the jury was considering its verdict, Sidna Edwards and Victor and Friel Allen wore brought into the court room in order that a motion might be made for a change of venue. A venire of 75 will be summoned from Bedford county for the next trial. It was decided to try Friel Allen next. The trial will begin Aug. I t, and will be. 011 the indictment charging the murder of "William Foster, the same as the indictment upon which Claude and Floyd Allen have been found guilty of first degree murder. Did it Ever Occur to You "Did it ever occur to you that a man's life is full of crosses and temptationHe comes into the world without his consent and goes oiit against his will,a.'i'l the'.v'ween is exceedingly rocky. The rule of contraries is one of the features of the trip. When he is little the big girls kiss him; when he is big the little girls kiss him. If he is poor, he is a bad manager; if he is rich, he is dishonest. It' he needs credit, he can't get it; if he is prosperous, every one wants to do him a favor. If he is in politics, it is for graft; if he is out of politics, he is no good to the country. If he doesn't give to charity, he is a stingy cuss; if he does, it's for show. If he is activ ely religious, he is a hypoerit; if lie takes no interest in religion, he is a hardened sinner; if he gives af fection, lie is a soft specimen; if he caivs for none, he is cold blooded. If he dies young, there was a great, future for him; if he lives to an old age, he missed his calling. If you save money you're a grouch, if you spend it you're a loafer. If you get it you're a grafter. If you don't get it you're a bum.'' The Appe-Tree Borer A correspondent wrote to Slate Zoologist Surface, Harrisburg Pa., for information concerning the treatmantof borers in his apple trees and received the following reply: "For the Apple tree borer 1 recom mend no digging, but locating the holes by observing the line powder which they grind ont through the bark and drop near the base of the tree. When the holes are found inject with a spring bottom oil can the liquid known as carbon bisul fide,, and close the hole with clay or if it is an irregular opening stuff in a small tuft of cotton soaked with carbon bisulfide, and cover this with clay. It is not necessary to cut the trees, as all cutting is liable to be more or less injurious w hen applied to the part of the tree thai' ' is infested with tin' borer. I suppose if one had time the best thing to do would lie to fill the holes with graft ing wax after applying the carbon bisulfide, where one has only a few trees it is possible to do this, but it is not practical in a large orchard."
