Louisville, Ky.—Thomas McCor mick, aged 3fi, watchman for the Bar num & Bailey circus, was fatally shot during the performance here one night recently. Will Anty, a negro, is under arrest for the crime. McCormick found two negroes peep ing into the tent used by women per formers for a dressing room. He re moiißtrated with them and they went away. A second time he caught th< peepers and calling an assistant made ready to eject them from the inclos ure. One of the negroes then drew n revolver and shot McCormick. WEALTHY FARMER IS ATTACKED BY AN OWL i / Suffering From Wounds Inflicted in Broad Daylight by In furiated Bird. West Alexander, Pa. —His furious light with a huge owl may be fatal to I'hilip Cruzan, a wealthy farmer, who is suffering from terrible wounds in dicted in the battle at his home. Cru zan, who is very feeble, while walk ing across his front yard was struck in the face by the owl, which in its blind flight apparently collided with him unintentionally. Cruzan was unable to tear the bird, which was a tremendous one of its «pocies, from its hold. The owl ap peared unusually ferocious in its at tack and soon had Cruzan blind from the blood which coursed over his eyes. Exhausted, he finally sank to the ground, where he was completely at the mercy of the owl. He was found some Time later unconscious, with the owi still pecking and clawing him with beak and talons. Ladies Swipe R. R. Towels. San Francisco, Cal.—Twenty-one thousand dollars' worth of towels were "lost" by the Southern Pacific railroad last yenr and from that rea son women who ride on its trains and boats will be compelled to fur nish their own towels hereafter. Funeral for Live Corpse. Pottsville, Pa. —Relatives of Peter Magal, who was an inmate of the Schuylkill county almshouse, several miles south of this place, were noti fled of his death and made prepara tions for bis funeral. When the tin dertaker received the remains at Shenandoah the mourners crowded around in tears. When the casket was opened it was found the body was not that of their relative. Indignant, the family of the dead man sent the undertaker to the almshouse to get the right body. When he reached the institution he found Magal hale and hearty. The body shipped in mistake was that of Charles Ouardin. It was promptly sent back and consigned to the anatomical board. Valentine Itolie, County Com missioner, attended the Commis sioner's meeting here Wednesday. Miss Iva Hess underwent an op eration at the Williamsport hos pital Tuesday and is recovering nicely. The Ladies of the V. I. 8. will conduct a bake sale in J. L. Smyth's store Saturday afternoon at 2:30. A. C. Jenkins having expressed his appreciation of the elYorts of the V.l. S. to keep the streets lighted,"donated some fresh eggs to the bake sale on Saturday to help the grand cause along. Floyd Masters Killed. Floyd Masters; a brakeman on tlieS. & N. V. R' R., was killed about 11 o'clok Thursday, Nov. 2. when a car of a freight train was derailed on the branch road be tween Ralston and Ralston Junc tion. The unfortunate man was riding on the car that left the rails and when it went over he was caught in the wreckage. The body was taken to bis home at Ricketts. Rose Scott Ritter, wife of Harold C. Ritter formerly of La porte, died Saturday afternoon at the Ritter home on Porter Place Towamla, aged 55 years. She had been ill a long time. Deceased was a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Titos. Scott, Sr.. of Porter Place, and was a young woman of many line attliinments. of sterling chris tian character, and her untimely death f* a crushing blow to the husband and members of her fam ily. Illinois, Ind. —John Jensen is nurs ing a broken ankle, received in a strange railroad accident. Jensen was operating a track bicycle on the rails when it was suddenly derailed and carried its rider to the bottom of a steep embankment. Crawling back to the track Jensen found a 12-pound carp lying across the rail and still wriggling. W. B. Killer and wife attended the funeral of Mrs. Harold Uitter at Towanda Monday. NOTICE.
