Towanda Review. Women and the Newspaper. To womankind, the news of t-lie the retail stores as seen in the ad vertising, makes an intimate per sonal appeal, because dost ly relat ed to home interests. Did you ever watch a woman read a news papc? If not try it to day, says the Paducah (Ivy.) Dem ocrat. Our observation, both at home and abroad, indicates that women show a very keen interest in the advertising. Thcj look with avid ity to see who is cutting the prices of children's clothing, who has the most fetching styles. They weigh every word of what the merchant says to them. It is with a less personal interest that they turn to the political and general news. Retail advertising is to the home keeper what the crop news is to the farmer, what the wholesale market reports are to the grocer. Women naturally feel this alert interest in the advertising, because it is full of information essential to their efforts to make the family income accom plish the largest results. Merch ants who fail to cooperate with this effort- by an adequate public state mentof prices anti values, are simply ignored in the apportionment of domestic expense. When a politician's name is rare ly seen in the dispatches, the voters assume he is out of the game. When a merchant's name rarely appears in the advertising, the women assume he is lost in the shullle. No business enterprise can afford to ignore the women. This term of court has brought to our village many of the candi dates of both parties for the dif ferent county oiliees to be filled at the coining election. We think we can safely sa\ that it would bother any county in the state tu bring forth a better and more in telligent looking lot of men than have shown up this week at the County Seat. Looking for Coal. Says the Dushore Gazette: O'Boyle & Clemmens of Bernice, have leased several hundred acres of land at Ringdale and are drill ing for coal. That section was drilled a few years ago, but not sufficiently to determine just how much coal there was. A small quantity of gas was also found. The News Item lakes satisfae ti >u in being able to say that the candidates who have announced themselves comprise some of the best men in the county, whom it is a pleasure to support and see elected. In the Republican party there is no opposition to A. F. lleess lor prothouotary, Messrs. Miller and Kilmer for Associate Judges and Joseph llelsnian for Treasuror. For County Commis sioners there is a warm contest. We suggest to the eight able and amiable gentlemen who seek the nomination for that of lice that where there are more pegs than holes, all pegs cannot find a hole. Therefore let your contest l>e warm and thourough, but at the same time fair and good natured. When the sun goes down on pri may election and the returns are in, feel good if you win, but do not take your defeat too seriously. A dozen different things may be the cause of your defeat and not one rellect upon you personally. The same causes may the next time sweep you in an easy winner. So we say work but don't worry. Peculiar Case. Say re has a peculiar case accord ing to the Times-Record. A strang er who said he was a "holy roller. " told Mrs. K. Heartbroken over the al legations the stranger made, Mrs. Wittig, in the hour of her sorrow took a quantity of laudanum and only the prompt attention of a physician saved her life. Now her husband is looking for the stranger who caused all the trouble. Notice of Transfer.
