Thurlow W, Null, Rector, A Mr. Campbell of Ralston, one day last week shot a l;n jje bear while hunting up Rock Run, but not knowing his shot had taken effect, lie left the woods without going after the bear which ran off at a lively rate after Mr. Campbefl fired. But his running was limi ted to only a few rods, as Mr. Campbell found him a few days afterward when traveling over the same ground. Judge Fanning of Bradford county rendered an opinion in the repetition of the Independent Tel ephone company of New Albany, reducing the tax levied by the borough against the company. This Telephone company is a local concern operating in New Albany. It has !»4 poles, two and one-half miles of wire and 31 'phones. The Borough Council levied a tax of 35 cents per pole and one dollar per mile on the wire, making a to tal levy of $35.40 for a year, which the telephone company claimed was unreasonable, and petitioned the court for a reduction. Judge Fanning opined that a tax of .15 per pole would be reasonable for the first year and then 12 cents per pole thereafter would create a fund sufficient to pay the expense of inspecting poles and wires. A two-hundred pound bear was shot and killed at Forksville, on Tuesday afternoon by a party of hunters among whom were Gus Plotts, O. J. Little and Charles Bryan. Mr, Bruin gave the hunt ers a merry game of "catch me if you can," nearly all afternoon on Forks mountain in sight of the village. About 4 o'clock the hunt ers managed to drive him to the creek where he was killed. After the animal was dressed and weigh ed, the hunters felt well repaid for their strenuous afternoon's game. They also captured two coons the same day. The large barn on the farm of Mrs. Dan Scanlin, in Cherry town ship, was burned down last Friday night. It was lirst seen by persons who were at work in the hay mow, but on account of the hay and straw that was quickly abl&ze nothing could be done to save the building. The live stock was safely gotten out of th'j barn but the summer crop of hay and fodder together with all farming implements were I confined with the building.
