The good roads special train which recently left St. I.ouia to tjur ten states for the purpose of educating the farmers and rural residents in the advantages to be derived from good roads is meeting with au enthusiastic reception. Many local good r mils as sociations have been formed, and thou sands have attended Hie meetings held. With the party making the tour are oflicials of the governme it anil several olJU'crs of the National .'->'ood (loads as eociation, and three cars of the special carry roadmaking machinery. At some of the stops made by the train object lesson roads are constructed to show m;iliT>l>'o AS OBJECT LESSON ItOAD. what a good road really is. One of these sample highways was built near a Missouri town as follows: First, the entire roadway between the fences was leveled. This was mostly done by pick and shovel work, although the plow was used on the sides. Then ttie road was given its proper arch and drainage, after which the center of the road for a width of nine feet was dug out to a depth of niue inches. In this trench were laid stones about the size of an egg, nnd these are regarded as the foundation. On top of that was placed crushed rock about the size of the ends of your lingers and on top of that the surface of screened crush, i! rock. Each of these layers was rolled by a steam roller as It was put down. The soft earth at the side was arranged to car ry oil' the water, and the road was finished. With the proper maintenance will last as long as a Ilomau road. Campbell "The Merchant'' SHUNK, PA. HAVE JiJST RECEIVED MY FALL and WINTER STOCK of CLOTHING.
