! hlican news .I.*AL£S L. WIN 6, Editor. Published Every Thursday Afternoon By The Sullivan Publishing Co. At the County Seat 1, of Sullivan County. LAPORTE, PA. Tv C. MASON, Preside!). F.'M. DUNHAM Treas THOS. J. INGHAM. Secretary. Entered at the Post Office at Laporte, as second-class mail matter. The" [ Sullivan Herald being so badly pregnated the spirt of kicking couldfnot helpjbelehing up some of its grasshopper"sp'it'and 'casting it at County[Supt. M.R.Black, charg ing him with heedlessness because he did the' columns of, the Herald in announcing the program of the County Institute* in connec tion with the other three papers of the county. The Herald feels that the County Supt, was partial and that the public suffered the lack of information on news of signal im portance. It seems to make a vast difference with the Herald as to '■ w hose ox is gored.' i» There is less reason to believe that the public was not sufficiently informed of the institute program it having been published in two party papers and one neutral organ of the county, than it is to suppose that the legal advertising of the Sheriff's office, limited to the narrow confines of Democratic papers only, receives the proper publicity which the law intends it should have. Never before, to our knowledge, has this county had sheriff sale advertising confined wholly to the narrow lim its of one-party publicity. Just why the Republicans of this county are at present so openly ignored is beyond the News Item's explana tion although it has repeatedly tried to learn the cause. The mystery is yet unsolved. No cause having ever arose to separate the sheriff and editor from pleasant social re lations which at present exists, the reason can only be surmised why the Republican side of the county are cut off from this im portant information. We have, however, strong suspicions as to the cause. We do not know that this condition is brought about by the instance of the Herald, and will not make that assertion. We do, however, believe much of the manifested evidence that the Her ald is the heart, back-bone, lungs and liver of the Democratic county machine which dominates many of the weak within its rank, only a few of the strong daring to assert their freedom of action. State laws wisely compel officers to distribute election advertising in two party papers each of which represent the two leading parties, thus giving all an opportunity of making them selves familiar mith matters that concern them. Why should any legal advertising which the law allows two papers, be otherwise treated? We know of no other county, other than Sullivan, that finds its officers confining the adv ertising brought under their dis pose! wholly to papers of their political faith. There is nothing political about a sheriff sale of real estate. It is business in its entirety. Business, politics and church are all distinct classes of their own,and never have they mixed well togeth er. Politics should in no way en ter into the proceedings of a sheriff sale. The object of the advertising is to make the transaction as public as possible to bring buyers at the sale. It is not the sheriff's money that pays the bill. Why should they take the right to use it to fur t her their personal or political ends'? 1 lie selection of the mediums best suited for the locality, by moral right, belong to the attorneys who , are working for the best interest of their clients, or those who have to furnish the means to pay the bills. This is the practice that is being tarried out in most counties of late years and it is as commendable as it is a good business practice. The reverse but shows contracted liess in more ways than one, and using the language of the Herald, • Deprives a large portion of the people of Sullian county of news of so signal importance."
