It was on the road coming from Dushore to Laporte Tuesday that Philo Kiesenger learned the humor of Irish wit. It was such that gave him a dangerous laughing fit. He came into town laughing; laughed all the time he was here and was still laughing when he left town. Philo had purchased a horse at To wanda and was bringing it home hitched to a buckboard that was giv en to him by the man who sold him the horse. As Philo says, "a funny Irishman" was riding with him to the county seat and as they were en gaged in talking of the good wagon thrown in with the deal, Philo de cided to try the speed of his new horse. A few sharp cuts of the whip laid over the back of the animal sent the buckboard around the turns like and uncontrollable automobile. Only at times did the wheels touch the ground. The excited Irishman no longer able to keep the seat and cling inging to the dashboard, looked in quiringly at Philo from his grotesque position on the bottom of the buck board and exclaimed: "Faith and did the man give ye the whip too." NATIONAL CAMPAIGN OUTLOOK Overwhelming Republican Majorities Desired This Fall to Insure a Con tinuance of Roosevelt, Protection and Prosperity. [Special Correspondence.] Philadelphia. Sept. 22. Manufac turers, business men and many hun dreds of thousands of employes of mercantile and industrial establish ments throughout Pennsylvania seem to be impressed with the important bearing the result of the approaching election in the state will have in shap ing the policy to be advocated by the Republican party in the next national convention. Already the election of delegates to the next Republican national conven tion is under way, and Pennsylvania has led off by naming the first Roose velt delegates chosen in the United States. While in the middle west there has been a revival of the agitation for so called "tariff reform," which is noth ing more nor less than a demand for Democratic free trade, Republicans of great manufacturing states like Penn sylvania are alert to the necessity of meeting this issue with prompt and emphatic declarations against any such movement. Through the agency of the Republi can state committee, the chairman of the Republican county committees have been warned to get In touch with the members of their respective com mittees and instruct them to advise every voter as to the bearing the elec tion this fall will have on the next presidential election. As a matter of fact, the utterances )f the Republicans of Pennsylvania, is reflected through the ballot box. lave great weight in the deliberations >f the delegates to the Republican uational convention, and therefore it Is essential that there shall be an Overwhelming Republican majority rolled up in Pennsylvania this fall. Such a majority will be considered &s Pennsylvania's voice in behalf of a continuance of the present era of pros perity and an emphatic protest against any and all attempts at tariff tinkering; in other words, such a verdict will be accepted to mean that Pennsylvania fa in favor of letting well enough alone: a policy which, if pursued, will prevent business disturbances and the consequent inauguration of a pe riod of depression which usually pre vails during presidential years. First of ExportloK Conntrlea.' The fact that the exports of the United States In the fiscal year just ended are greater than those in any preceding year except 1000 lends spe cial interest to a statement presented by the department of commerce and ial)or through Its bureau of statistics which shows the relative growth of the export trade of the principal coun tries of the world for a term of years and compares that of the United States with other countries. The table In question shows the total value of ex ports of domestic products from the principal countries of the world in 1870, 1880, 1890 and the latest available year. A study of this table of exports from the principal exporting countries of the world shows that the United States, which occupied fourth place in the list of exporting countries in 1870, now shows a larger total in the first column which represents the latest available year than any other country.—Bulletin of the Iron and Steel Association.
