PUBLICAN NEWS ITEM. CHAfiLES L. WING, Editor. Published Afternoon By The Sullivan Publishing Co. At the County Seat of Sullivan County. IiAPOBTE, PA. Kiitereil m t lie I'ohl < Mice at l.aporte, »n Becond-clasß mail matter. Tax payers should not forget that the outstanding obligations of Sulli van County on the Ist, of Jan. 1902, according to the Auditors' report, amounted to 163.533.48 as follows: Bonds, 38.000.00, interest bearing orders, S2O. 052, 90, judgements, f">, 380, 49, total, $03,433,39. The report shows due to the coun ty from various sources the sum of $1,338,35, which if collected and ap plied to the debt would reduce the debt to $59,095,13. How much of t lie debt has been paid during the year we do not know, but the judg ment docket shows a judgment has been confessed against the county as follows: Patrick Daly vs. the Coun ty of Sullivan, No. 9(5 Sept. T. 1902. Judgment interest, Aug. 23, 1902, for SIOOO. We presume this was for borrow ed money. We do not understand that the Commissioners who incurred this indebtedness, at or before of so doing, provided for the collection of an annual tax sufficient to pay the interest, and also the principal there of within thirty years, as required by sixth section of the ninth "article of the Constitution. Theyjwill have an opportunity to explain this tran snction to the County Auditors. TEACHERS' COUNTY INSTITUTE. Every one knows that windows will rattle when a loud noise Is made In a room, but very few persons know that n glass can be broken by shouting into It. Any ordinary glass which has a clear tone will do for this trick, and the ex act nature of its tone can readily be ascertained by passing a moistened i linger around Its rim. This point be ing settled, the performer should hold the glass in front of his mouth and shout Into it In a tone about an octave j higher than that of the glass. There- i suit will he that the glass will break Immediately, and for the reason that j it will not have strength enough tore- i sist the force exerted against it by the waves of air. The thinner the glass is the more easily It will be broken. The Hent of I.nva. The lava streams from the eruption of Vesuvius in 1858 were so hot twelve years later that steam Issued from their cracks and crevices. Those that flowed from Etna in 1787 were found to be steaming hot Just below the crust as late as 1840. The volcano Jorullo, in Mexico, poured forth In 1739 lava that eighty-seven years Inter gave off columns of steaming vapor. In 1780 it was found thnt a stick thrust into the crevices instantly ignited, although no discomfort was experienced in walking on the hardened crust. Thorough Work.
