AND GLANCES AT THE TIMES.
—Atty. Bradley made a business
trip to York State last week.
—Joe Coeper the clothier visited
his parents in Elmira, recently.
—Mrs. S. O. Malin, of Baltimore,
is visiting her sister Mrs. M. E.
Reeder.
—George Gorman of Nordmont,
was in the county scat on business,
Tuesday.
—Preaching services will be held
in the B ptist church, Sunday eve
ning next, at 7:30.
—W. B. Ritter, wife and daughter
Ada are spending a few days with
Union county relatives.
—M. E. Reeder lias purchased the
large timber tract of the Barrows
estate along the Loyal Sock creek.
—"Free silver—all the currency of
the United States made from silver,
is a good thing."—Win. J. Bryan.
"Bryan is a good thing."—Silver
Barons.
William Hummel, who was
convicted of murder last week at
Williamsport, has confessed his
crime. He tells a Sun reporter how
he murdered his wife and children
with an ax while they were all in
bed.
—lf the Rev. Sheldon would give
us an illustration of how, Christ
would preach in the pulpit, most
people would think it in better taste
than his present performance, al
though both seem to savor of pre
sumption.
—Sunday was anything but a
sultry day in Laporte. We believe
that an iron kite with a log-chain
for a tail could have been easily sail
ed lrom this low elevation. We
mean the elevation of the town—
not the story.
—Mrs. Ernest Hegel and daugh
ter Albertina, left for New York
city, Monday, from which place they
took passage on the steamer Ken
sington, which sailed from Now
York, March 21. Mrs. Hegel ex
pects to spend several months in
Germany and will also take in the
Paris Exposition.
—Winter with all its blustriness
and its belated white mantle arrived
a month too late last Friday. The
weather was suddenly changed from
gentle spring to the rigors of zero
temperature and something like 8
inches of snow on the ground. Mon
day, however, saw a change and
the "beautiful" disappeared as sud
denly as it came.
—ltepresenative Hepburn of lowa
has introduced a bill prohibiting the
use of the mails to papers giving
accounts of prize fights. If he would
forbid the publishing of challenges
and answers to challenges, he would
be more likely to succeed in his ob
ject. One thing prize fiighters must
have or die, and that is plenty of
mouth warfare.
—Bishop Potter of New York,
who, six months ago was a foe of
the expansion policy, now declares
himself in favor of the United States
governing the Phillippines. He
has just returned from those Islands
and says he is convinced that the
Filipinos are not capable of self
government.- He further says that
the better class of Filipinos favor
American occupation, which they
think means increased prosperity
for thein.
HON. CONRAD KRAUS DEAD.
Continued from page One.
This left upon tlie Associate Judges
a great deal of business which would
have otherwise been attended to by
the President Judge. Counsel often
asked to have eases on the argument
list disposed of by the Associates
between terms rather than leave
them over until the ensuing term.
Judge Kraus in such cases always
showed a clear comprehension of the
points involved, and in the appeals
which went from the Associate
Judges to the Superior Court, they
were affirmed,
Judge Kraus's characteristics up
on the Bench was strict attention,
quick perception, sound judgment
and unswerving integrity, lie had
the courage of Ins convictions and
could neither be misled by plausible
sophistry or overawed by declama
tion. He was an honest, truthful
and trustworthy man. lie is mourn
ed by a host of friends wherever he
was known.
Bernice Echoes.
Tlios. J. Mod u ire of Scran ton and
G. E. Donohoe of Dushore, insur
ance agents for the New York Mu
tial Life Insurance Company, were
in town Saturday looking up busi
ness.
lion. J. S. Line, Joseph Helsnian
and John Schaad Jr. attended Ma
sonic lodge at Monroeton, Tuesday
evening.
Ilev. J. C. Campbell was a caller
at New Albany one day last week.
David Shields who has been sick
is gaining.
George Morton has returned from
Williamsport.
Richard Bennet attended the dance
at Lopez Friday evening. Dick
says the Lopez girls are great two
steppers, and has been trying to
learn ever since became home.
James White has moved his
family from Monroeton to this place
in the house vacated by William
Quick.
J. S. Taylor spent Wednesday and
Thursday at Towanda on business.
Mrs. H. W. Taylor is quite sick
at this writing.
Mary Haley and Mary McDermit
went to Towando Monday morning.
Wm. Newell and Miss Blanche
Brown, students at the Mansfield
Normal School are home on a vaca
tion.
Prof. F. W.Meylert and wife, of
Laport, were the guests of Mr. and
Mrs. Joel Saxon, on the 11th inst.
The upper ten enjoyed a sleigh
ride to Dushore Saturday evening.
Everything went all right with the
exception J. A. and J. 11. they got
slightly mixed up in which Jenny
they wanted. They report a de
lightful time.
Our postal clerk has given up
gardening and David the celebrated
claronetist of theCitizens band has
has given up his seat in the White
House at this place. Oh what a
change in business.
Rosa, the renowned bass singer
gaveoneof his delightful concerts
in the street the other evening to the
delight of those who had retired.
Sleighs were in demand on Sun
day and the girls had a heavenly
smile for every young man they
met.
The farmers of Delaware have
organized a "Produce Association."
They have done this for the purpose
of securing more remunerative prices
for fruits and other farm produce,
by every legitimate means. It
seems that the prices obtained last
summer, by the farmers for fruit
and vegtables were ridiculously
low and unprofitable, and the object
in view now is "to secure, if possi
ble a uniform price for such
products. The members of the asso
ciation have begun operations by
agreeing not to raise or sell tomatoes
for a less sum than $7 a ton, this
being from £1 to s?2 more than last
years prices. They are to encourage
cash buyers as much as possible, and
outside of this to deal only with
commission merchants. The com
mission men are to keep 7 pef cent
of the gross sales as payment for
their services. Doubtless some of
our populist friends will see in this
a trust. How the public may regard
it is another matter. If the result is
simply to eliminate a few of the
middlemen and give the farmer
better rates without increasing the
cost to the consumer, there wont
be much clamor, trust or no trust.
At any rate, the experiment will
be watched with considerable inter
est.
