—lt is disgusting to hear sonic
people speak scornfully of girls wire
have to work for a living, even "or
dinary" house work. No sensible
man is dazzled by the glitter of 11
jeweled hand, a gold braclet or watch,
bought on "tick" or money belong
ing to some grocennan or printei
perhaps. All this has not so much
facination as a pleasant disposition,
happy, intelligent face, a well cook
ed meal and a tidy home. A rosy
cheeked, happy face in the kitchen
is worth a dozen operatic singers in
the parlor, pawing on the piano and
screaming "A Flower from Mother's
Grave," or "My Mother was a Lady"
when very likely the poor mother i>
hanging out clothes in the back
yard.
—The Citizens' Military Band ol
Bernice scored a big success and won
many worthy praises by competent
judges for the style and manner ol
tlif very excellent music they ren
dered on their visit to this place lasl
Friday. 11 was a disappointment tc
many that the inclement weathei
was an intervening obstacle which
rendered it impossible to attend tlx
concert in the courthouse, yet there
were many who took a good drench
ing that they might hear this much
heard of band. It was a highly
pleased audience, notwitlrstand the
disagreeable features attending with
out. There was music within and
of the kind that gives charm to the
senses and expels care, as none pres
ent had 110 attention to pay to theii
shower bath and water soaked gar
ments; and the band played on.

I The Citizens Military Band, weni
to Laporte Friday evening and wak
ened up tiiat ancient town, by giv
ing one of their delightful concerts,
Owing to the heavy shower in the
evening, they were compelled togo
to the courthouse, instead of in the
