Last Fri day morning at live o'clock he was taken with a sinking spell passing into a comatose state, find although lingering tint ill Monday morning at o'clock, never recovered con sciousness. Dr. Nestor, the local physician, was called into consulta tion with his son in-law Dr. Vander vocr,of Jleinbeck, and Dr. I'rouse of Waterloo, but his race was run—he was past all human aid -and their ministrations were in vain. Death was caused by cerebral congestion. Mr. lied ford was one of our oldest settlers, moving here in lst;7. lie possesed a good memory and al though lie could ho seldom prevailed < upon to do so, was a good storyteller and had a large fund of the humor ous sides of incidents of the early day a when this was yet but a com- I paritively new country. Afterspeijd- \ ing a few years working for others lie niarried,«in I*7l,Martha Whitely and settled on a farm in the south of J Lincoln township, There was good money in those days in stock and } I logs, those industries being eonipari- • lively undeveloped, and instead Of sticking to wheat as did many of his neighbors, Mr. lied ford saw the pos sibilities of stock raising and took 1 ad vantage of them, making a com fortable fortune. j» Tiring of farm life, with his fami ly lie moved to Waterloo in Is!i7, making that his uominel home al t-horgli spending the greater part of his time in California where he was also interested in enterpriser. In 1 ssji in- decided to again return to the farm, and that his children might enjoy I tetter educational and social advantages purchased the Ward farm a mile southwest of this place and removed to it. This has since lieen his home until two years ago when with .Mrs. I led ford he planned and had I>uilt their beautiful new home in town,in which he doubtless anticipated [spending many happy years, lint alas for human plan and anticipatiods! Man promises,(iod disjw >s('s. As a citizen he was public spirited and liberal, a worthy cause seldom finding him with a deaf ear. And in hi> domestic and neighborly re lations he was kind and gracious, a loving husband and father and a good neighbor. Although quiet and unasuming lie was at different times elected to posi tions of trust, having been secretary of the Hudson Creamery Association since I KH2, and a member of the local school board the past two years. It was doubtless due largely to his good business methods the Creamery Association was able to pay oil its indebtedness two or three years ago. The funeral servicer were held Wednesdays short service at the house followed by a sermon atlO::!<> o'clock by Revs.Lewis and Light as sisted. The services were attended by an immense concourse of friends, many of whom were unable to gain entrance into the church. The body was laid at rest in the Hudson cem etery.
