E.R.Pow ell, at Satterfield. —Victor Smith of Buffalo, and Robt. Wright of Athens, were in town one day last week with their wheels. —Ulysses Bird of Estella, was at the county seat on Friday at tending to the business of Admr. of Richard Biddle deed. —Joe Cooper, the enterprising proprietor of the Laporte Clothing Store visited with relatives in F.lmira this week. —Justice of Peace Chas. R. Lauer on Friday last performed a marriage ceremony at his busy office. The contracting parties were Frank Har ris and Mary Fox of Eagles Mere. —A large number of our citizens attended the musical and dramatic entertainment in St. Francis hall, Mildred, 011 Friday evening. —Hon. Thos. J. Ingham and Mrs. E. V. Ingham were the guests of Hon. E. P. Ingham of Philadelphia, the early part of this week. —The Executive Committee of the Sullivan County Sunday School As sociation held a meeting at Muncy Valley on Thursday, May 11, and arranged program for the Annual Convention which is to be held in lx>pe/., August 17 and 18th. Dr. C. 1). Voorhees of Instanter, was married to Miss Eflie Fulmer of near Eagles Mere, Tuesday evening. The Doctor was granted a divorce shortly after moving from here one year ago. Park of Monroeton has plac ed at the Bethel cemetery near Forksville, in the Wheatl.v and Snell lot, the most beautiful monument and markers to be found in the coun ty. The idea advanced in placing markers to show where each grave is to be made is something new and no doubt will be largely followed. The Lewis Publishing < 'o., of < 'lii cago is delivering the new history il has published of Sullivan county. The first part of the work contains a | history of the early settlements of j the county which was written by ■ lion. TIIO-. J. Ingham of Laporte, who is probably more familiar with ; the early history of this county than any one else. Mr. Ingham spent ! much time in preparing the matter for publication and the citizens of j Sullivan county are very much in debted to Mr.lngham for today hav ing a well written history of the c< hi nt y. — Suffi ran < !nz» th. Dutton is rushing his bark job with a large crew of men. John Rrombeek has moved from Potter county to this place and will work for the Tanning Co. Robert McEwen has a contract for pealing three thousands cord of bark this season. Eatellu. The recent rains have been a very welcome visitor in this vicinity. Miss Cora Brown, who has been at ITillsgrove for the past week, has returned. The P. <>. S. of A. have rented their blacksmith and wagon shop to C. J. Fuller. Green of 11 illsgrove was callirfg on friends in town Sun -1 Mrs. J. M. Tompkins (nee Boyle) ; formerly of this place, late of Sayre, died very suddenly Sunday morning. ' Deceased was a very devoted wife land mother and has from childhood led a christian life, and was respect ed and beloved by all who knew her. She leaves a husband and one child to mourn her loss. The funeral was held at this place Tuesday. Rev. Waltman will preach in the j Disciple church at this place next Sunday at 11 a.m. HIS FINAL SUMMONS. I William Meylert Passed Peacefully Awn.v I Sunday Evening. At 7::t0 o'clock Sunday evening I Mr. William Meylert, whom for years Laporte lias claimed as an honored and respected citizen, pass ed peacefully away. From the bosom of a loving family, the Reaper has taken to his reward a kind father and a pure christian man. Deceased had been bedfast for the past six weeks with a general break ing down of old age which gave hut slight hope of his recovery. Mr. Meylert was a life-long mem ber of the baptist church and a hard and earnest worker in the Sabbath School. lie loved the church, he loved the school, beloved and enjoy ed the life of a true christian and its labors, and each Sunday found him in his accustomed place in church work, but better still, his week-day life was as exemplary as his Sun days' teaching, lie was well and favorably known to the majority of the people of this county and com manded their confidence anil esteem. The funeral services were held at the baptist church Wednesday after noon :tt - o'clock, conducted by l'ev. Powell. Interment in Mt. Ash cemetery. An obituary will appear in these columns next week. llernice Echoes. The fair and entertainment held in the St. Francis Mali Monday, Tuesday and Friday evenings of last week was a social and tlnantial suc cess. All the plays were given by the St. Francis Dramatic Associa tion and were fully up to date, and all the characters took tliair parts like old veterans. Mr. and Mrs. Henry basley spent last week visiting friends at Scran ton. Miss blanch Sweeney of Sattertield was the guest of Miss Maggie Wri ght last week. Lockwood are en tertaining their cousins, the Law head bros., of Flmira, this week. Mr. Roberts of Philadelphia, who is interested in the American Mfg. Miss Forrest, a former missionary to Japan, gave two very interesting lectures in the M. P. church this week. Miss Forrest succeeded not only in interesting her hearers but also received a very liberal collection. Airs. W. L. Jennings has returned from a sad visit toiler home, having suffered the severe trial of losing her father. Mrs. B. \V. Jennings and son, Worth, left 011 Tuesday to visit her mother in Jamestown, X. Y. The Lopez Athletic Association is constructing a new ball ground near the town. Our Base-Ball, under its Manager, B. W. Jennings, invites challenges from teams representing neighboring towns. Judging from appearances the hotel and restaurant business is a profitable one here. Jas. P. McGee, manager of the Hotel Lopez is re pairing and adding to this already comfortable hotel. 11. W. McKib bins has transformed the old Clark property into one of the best hotels in the county, while \V. \V. Stea father places himself inline with the majority of the American people, by illustrating his favor of territorial expansion, having added quite an addition to his saloon. The teachers are to he congratulated upon the work they have done. Mr. J. X. Mathews, who lately en tered into the marriage state lias not yet returned from his wedding tour. Judging from the last reception ten dered to a married couple in Lopez by the tin can brigade, Mr. Mathews would be fortunate if he did not an nounce his coining. May ! frost! cold weather ! I fami ly a congenial trio. Yet we seem to stand the usual order fairly well. Jennings Bros, mill shut down for the last two days while some repairs were being made. Mr. Herman Schram, the popular proprietor of the Lopez Sporting Kin porium lately announced by a num ber of kegs (emitting quite a suspic ious odor) placed before his door that he had changed his business. Later: Mr. Schram wishes us to state that appearances deceived 11-, as he was the victim of a practical joke, which he attempted to reciprocate by giv ing a "shingling" to the supposed perpetrator. Nearly three hundred children with their teachers assembliil at the Base Ball Park and spent tlie afternoon in sports and the consideration of cake and lemonade. The three remaining grades will not close until June, owing to the late ness of opening in two cases, and to the illness, during the winter, of the Principal the High School is also late inclosing.
