Drake, of y county has one of the juipped offices in the county 6.— iVei o Age. The county statement published elsewhere in tho REPUHLIACAN, is quite lengthy. This legal document grows in length each year. Mr. and Mrs. Higlcy of Laporte, who have been visiting friends in Bradford county for the past month returned home, Saturday, Oscar Snyder of Laporte, who has been visiting friends in Cata wissa for several weeks, returned Lome one day last week. We givo the tickets as nominated by our borough people elsewhere. It is evident that the fight will ecu ter on justice of the peace and con stable. Three ear loads of hides were ] received at the Laporte tannery last week and it is presumed that opera tion at this plant will be resumed in the very near future. The Ladies Aid Socioty will meet at the residence of Mrs. Tinklepaugh 1 Saturday, February Bth, 1896. MRS. J. il. SPENCEB, Sec'y. ' Good democrats say it was a Prohibition-Democratic caucus, and they do not feel duty bound to sup port the ticket. This is a correct view of it. Muui Social. There will be a Mum social at the residence of Miss Fanny Fiukle's, Friday evening, February Tth. Every one is cordially invited. Ei-Sherill Mahaffuy is now pro prietor of the Farmer's Hotel, Du shore. He moved to the metropolis , Monday. The Sheriff has lots of friends and will do a good business. Sunday, February 2d, was ground hog day and the sun shown bright all day long, and according to the old adage we can expect six weeks of cold weather. We don't take any stock in this saying, do you ? The party given at the town hall on Friday evening was enjoyed by all present. There were twenty or thirty couple registered. A nrst class supper was served at the Com mercial Hotel. R. A. Conklin of Laporte, is build ing a book case for Judge Dunham's offloe and when completed it will be something pretty nice. The county commissioners awarded Mr. Conklin the contract of building the case and the price fixed for the same is S4O. A certain few democrats of La porte borough had considerable to ■ay about the republican caucus of last year, including the prohibition people. What have they to say for themselves this year ? It depends on whose ox is gored, now, doesn't it boy's ? There are a few tax payers in our borough who would willingly chip in and help pay the cost of a divorce suit between the Ist and 2d wards; providing the papers were granted. This, is, as our township neighbors predicted when the hamlet was an nexed. The editor is pleased with the annexation. Let the down town peo ple knock out, politically, those of the up town people who opened the way for a greater Laporte. Fellows you are only doing what the old tax pay ers of the Ist ward would do if they were offered the opportunity. Go ia lemons—sour but sweet. I Democratic candidates for count}' : I offices, are on the increase. The number is out of sight. On Saturday the 7th inst., tho teachers of the western part of the county will hold a local institute at ForKsville. They will be addressed I on the preceding Friday evening by Rev. It. Lane of Porksville, who is an able and eloquent speaker. Judge Dunham returned home from Tunkhannock where he had been holding court, on Friday morn ing last, sick with La Grippe. He was confined to his homo for several days, but at this writing is very much better. "Farmer" A Candidate. Th 6 Philadelphia Times is author ity for ttie statement that Congress man Kulp of this district will be a candidate for re-election this fall, and quotes him as saying that he believes he cm increase his majority of two years ago when he had 894 majority. During the last four weeks revival services have been held at Eagles Mere. The afternoon appointment, of Rev. 11. K. Miller, twenty-five have professed conversion and await baptism. During these meetings the house has been filled nightly and sometimes crowded, making it neces sary to use the chairs out of the church parlors. Mr. Miller has been ably assisted by his wife in these meetings, who more than filled the pulpit on Sunday' evening while the pastor was absent. J. H. Spencer of Laporte and agent for the Penn Life Insurance Company, is doing quite a business for the company in this vicinity. Judge Dunham secured his services for a ten thousand dollar policy, recently and others of our home people did a similar act, but for smaller amounts. The Penn is one of the most reliable companies in existance and Harry is a first class agent. Frank Ring who has served as hostler at the Laporte llotol for the past few months, was arrested on Saturday for attempting to assault a 13 year-old girl on Friday night last. George P. Karge, father of the little girl brought the suit, which was to have been heard before Ilobt. Storinont, J. P., but the defendants waived a hearing and Ring was placed under $1,200 bail. lie failed to secure bondsmen and now reposes in the county jail awaiting the result of the grand jury. The case is repre sented by Atty. E. J. Mullen for plaintiff and Atty. A. J. Bradley for defendant. A SIMII.AU CASE. For Fourteen EIOIIG Years. Wilkes Barre, Jan. 30.—Joseph Bellas, who was convicted to-day of attempting to assault a 7-year-old girl, was sentenced by Judge Lynch to sepcrate and solitary confinement in the penitentiary for fourteen years and nine months and SIOOO fine. Judge Lynch said if little girls could not bo protected it was not his fault. LATER. The defandant, Frank Iling was given his liberty, Tuesday. His father, John King of Hughesville and Herman Ring of Laporte are his bondsmen. It is thought the case will be settled before court convenes. SHUNK ITEMS, Mrs. Dr. Yoorhees of Laporte, is visiting at Jethro Battin's at Shunk. Wesley Porter, aged 80 years, G months, died at Ellentou on the 29, tilt., and was hurried at that place on the 30th. He has been a resident of Ellentou for the past 33 years. Four children survive him. A number of our residents took part in a bear hunt, Saturday, but up to the present time, bruin has not materialized. Dauson and Joe were out enjoying the fine weather on Sunday. Or wasn't the weather any object '< Oalace Vanrighten of Bradford, Visited friends in Shunk last week. Joe saya that he has some fiue trotting stock that he practices every afternoon and morning. The Sullivan Sign and Advertising Agency is a new concern organized by Geo. L. Campbell of Shunk and others of Western Sullivan for the purpose of furnishing signs of all kinds, distributing circulars etc. They intend to put up advertising bill boards in different parts of the county and rent the space. Geo. L. 1 Campbell, the manager, will desigh and superintend the Bign work. Many of his signs arc fine and origin -1 ul and equal to any city work of the kind. The Chiel is a hustler hut he don't gel all the news and we intend to 1 see a little of it in the REPUBLICAN in the future. We may even com» pete with him in verse, and if we do ' look out. OBSEUVEFT, LOPEZ ITEMS. MR. EDITOU: —Not having seen anything in your paper from our enterprising town we will try and send you a few items occasionally. A son of David Brown is very sick with pneumonia. A small child of Derwood Saddlen eyser is very sick. Rev. Spangler is holding a series ! of protracted meetings in the church; the best ever held in the town. As there were two union caucuses held here, each with a full nomina tion, wc will not name the candidates for the offices, only vote for the best man. Jennings Bros, are the only ones improving at present in the way of building. They arc having their store room enlarged and a porch built on in front, to be ten feet wide and two story high, where the finest view in town can be had of the saw dust city. They are also having their offices removed Irom down stairs to the second floor, the first one at the east end will be a private olllcc furnished off in the latest de signs of hard wood and with the new furniture will be the finest office in the county. The second one will be the book-keeper and typewriter's room, where may be found C. M. Toser, always ready to do any tiling in his power to have things go along smoothly, and Miss Clara Ballard is always busy with her typewriter, and when you visit this room you will always find it neat and clean and an up to date first class office. The next one at the west end is tho one we all like the best, for it. is here where we can go and get our cash every 20th of each month and it comes with the cash as regularly as the 20th comes. Stcafather and sons are doing the work; that shows that J. Bros, hire home mechanics when it is possible. They have also bought the Trexler & Terrell mill near Lo- j pez and will use that for a hardwood | mill and will start about the first of April and will give employment to another 100 men. Such men as they are looked for in every town; they are not on!} 1 interested in Lo pez and vicinity but directly in the whole county and indirectly all over the whole country and that is the reason why 9 out of every 10 voters wants Hon. B. W. Jennings to be a candidate one more term for Rep resentative, as he knows and we know that we knows just what tho people want better than anyother man we can think of in the district, by the talk of tiie other peoplo out side of our town we can hoar the same thing. Windfield Potter carries liis arm in a sling; hurt at the factory last week. The ice harvesting is all clone here. C. 11. Jennings has had a large addition built to his residence. WOODSMAN. Now Sliorill Woller. Harry Faux, the chap who hired a rig of liveryman Ilees, and failed to return it, and was later arrested at Corning, N, Y., was on Saturday brought to Towanda on requisition papers by Constable Emery, and lodged in the Bradford county jail. —Towanda Jlq>.
