j IVIM.I INNCUKT ni KUATKI).
The heavy rains commencing on
Thursday evening of last week and
continuing until Tuesday of this
week, brought destruction along the
Valley of the West Branch of the
' Susquehanna; the like of which lias
, never been known in the Valley ex
cept in June 1889. The city of
Williamsport was inundated and
much damage has been done. The
' water flooded her streets, being
112 some four feet in depth about the
.Court House. All of the streets
that lay low were flooded six and
seven feet deep. Tholieadingß.il.
' tracks at their depot was covered
with water some eight feet. The
•several booms gave away on Mon
day and all of the logs were swept
down the river, also was three spans
|of the Market street bridge taken
away.
i The damage is great, but it is not
(thought it w ill be as great as that
'caused by the 'B9 flood. The
j Williamsport people experienced
lot* on the Ist of June 'B9, and with
the coming of the heavy rains they
(scented danger, and all day Sunday
people were busy moving their goods
jto places of safety and consequently
were mire or less prepared for the
rise of the water. Oil Monday at
about :>::>() the river reached its
highest pilch, ,'SO feet, which was 31
inches less than the- June flood.
Loyal Sock was in it too, fhe
usual serene aid crystal waters of our
Sullivan couuty sparkling stream
igot on its high horse and was one of
the chief tributaries lo the West
Branch. We have not learned
whether there was any damage done
along its Valley or not.
The Healing R. I!, bridge at
Muncy and which was double track
and was supposed to he one of the
h"uviest structures along their road,
was swept oil her piers and made n
total wreck. The Pcnn. 11. R
bridge at Montgomery, also suc
cumed to the mighty deep and two
or three .pins of the Reading bridge
at West Miito i. 'J'lils iutcrfcrred with
