BLAISE'S END WAS PEACEFUL. SIIRROIXOKI* RY II3S FAMIIA THE URRAT STATESMAN FAMES UIIKTLV AWAY WITHOUT PAIS. JAMES G. BLAINE. | JAMES GILLESPIE BLAINE, [ • Born January, 31, 1830, • • Died Friday January 27, 1593. • • Buried Friday January 30, IS'J3. • Tlie hand of death has again laid itself upon one of the Republic's distinguished sons, and has added another name to the fearful mortu ary roll of men and women in high stations during tliH period of the present executive administration. The nation only a few days since was shocked by the sudden and un expected demise of the nineteenth President of the United States. Last week opened with the death of Associate Justice Lamar and closed with the culmination oft the antici pated public bereavement in the death of James Gillespie Blaine ; a Representative and Speaker of the House of Representatives and a Senator in the Congress ol the Unit ed States; twice chief member of the Executive Cabinet; for over a quarter of a century the idol of the people for Presidential honors and once tLc Republican party's standard bearer. JAMES G. BLAINE was a native of Pennsylvania, lie was a resident of Maine. And yet neither State can claim him as her own. He was a man not to be confined by the narrow limits of State boundaries. He was one of those Americans, of whom it can be said, he belonged to the United States. He was loved wherever the Stars and Stripes waved, lie was honored in all sec tions. He was a true American, of Revolutionary stock, a lover of everything American. What great er eulogy could be paid him than this—he was BLAINE, not of Penn sylvania, not of Maine, but of America! In the death of JAMES GILLESPIE BLAINE the greatest American Statesman passes away. He came into public life in a stormy period. He was an active participant in the building up of the reunited country. It Las been a customary lliin<i for Home of bis political opponents to ask, whenever his claims upon the Presidency have been published: What has be done ? What erent measure has be ever produced ? It would have been much nearer the mark to ask: What has he not done ? 'What ore:it measure has he not had a band in ? It is true that there is 110 distinctive piece of legis lation. like tho McKinley bill, the Mills bill, the Morrison bill, which is prefaced by his name, hut even with the McKinley bill he had an intimate connection, for he it was who evolved the reciprocity idea and opened new markets, lie it was who instigated the Pan American Congress and bound the South American countries to us with closer lies of friendship. It was a BLAINE Congress throughout, lie it was, even, who shaped finally the important legislation which recon structed the Southern States lalelv in rebellion ami admitted them back to full partnership. From the day when he entered Congress until his resignation from the HAHRISON Cabinet he never ceased to have an active interest in national affairs, or to participate in them in one way or another. But BLAINE has gone from us. His political ambitions and ques tions of statecraft are forever laid aside. He had his praises and re wards, be had his criticisms. He fought vigorously he was a leader of leaders, and was never known to show the white feather. lie made enemies, of course. No aggressive man is ever without them. They brought accusations, but lie out lived slander as other public men have done. It seems to be im possible for an American statesman to escape calumny, and BLAISE was no exception. But he silenced all enemies and lived togo to his grave at length honored as few men ever have been. His career now becomes history, and who shall write it ? The history of JAMES G. BLAINE? Why, it is the history of the nation for ihe past thirty years, I ANNUAL STATEMENT OF THE BECEIPTSIEXPENSES, DF*Tp^DipT«*DF* ( aniLl¥«f*FDß 1892. A NNI!
