A local institute will be held at Shunk, on February 17th and 18th. Program will be published next week. ■ 1 ■ ■ Bishop Phillips Brooks, the dis~ tinguished Episcopalian of Boston, Mass., died of heart failure, Jn Mon day morning at 6:30 A. M. «MI «MI J. J. Four stone masons registered there on Tuesday night. We predict that the guests of the Mountain House will be well cared for. Steve Murphy of Cherry, passed through town on Tuesday with fifty-two hundred of haj, drawn by one team of horses. He was on his way to Keho's camp near Nord mont. It was an immense load, perhaps the largest ever brought to our town. Frank Crossley, mail contractor between LaPorte and Ncrdmont, is doing a paying business these days. He very seldom leaves or returns with less than four to six pas sengers. The comers and goers are mostly interested in or employees of the railroad. PITTSBURG, Jan. 20.—Hugh F. Dempsey, District Master Work man of District Assembly No. 8, Knights of Labor, was found guilty as indicted this afternoon for caus ing poison to be administered to the non-union men employed in the Homestead mills. With the road built down Loyal Sock—what a fine drive it would make for either the Forksville or LaPorte young people, when in need of a sleighride or a little rec reation. We would enjoy the hos pitality of mine host Major Seeley quite frequently, would'nt we, boys and girls ? Our attornies are making prepara tions for court. The February ses sion will be long and tiresome end we predict that not a few of our learned expounders of the law will wear a baggard appearance at the close of the session. The court and stenographer will not resemble rose buds either. But say, how about the District Atty. Will he pull through ? The doubt is in his favor. MUNOY VALLEY ITEMS. J. P. Miller drives a fine match team. Jeff Secnles of Hills Grove, is visiting his brother Samuel at this place. Hon. Jos. Ganscl is kept pretty busy carrying o niati and frolght to the 'Mere. G. W. Biggers, agent for farm ing implements, has ordered a stock for the spring trade. Hov. J. F. Glass is holding a series of meetings nnd is enjoying a large attendance. William Yocum and wife of Bent on, spent Saturday evening with Warren Pennington and family of this place. Ellis Swank our jolly blacksmith is busy day and night, and his large patronage is proof of his skillful workmanship. Mr. Jos. Walburn our obliging and gentlemanly carriage and wag on maker is over run with work. He is about to employ more help. Mr. F. P. Johnson, an old and respected citizen, cracks his fingers and remarks, that this is the coldest spell of weather he has known for years. Hugh Parker formerly ticket agent at this place for the W. & N H. R. R., has resigned said place and accepted a clerkship of the firm of M. D. Stevens & Son. Wm. Moran a young man of this place, has accepted a clerkship in the Companies store. Will is a fine young man and will no doubt prove equal to the undertaking. The cold wave that struck the Valley last week was a scorcher and almost froze Prof. Gavilt and Miss Grim, school teachers, from their respective recitation rooms. They were obliged to call on the directors, to bank up around the school build ing. Pennington & Bros., have stored a large quantify of ice for thu sum mer trade. The boys, you know are in the butchering business and have lots of use for the ice harvest during the heated season of the year. They slaughter two large cattle, weekly, on an average. Prof. M. D. Sweeney of Hemlock Grove, was transacting business at the Valley Saturday evening. Mike you know used to teach school down here and naturally cnougn got acquainted with the girls, and I guess that is what brought him down Saturday evening. 1 pride myself of looking up these matters pretty close and 1 can give 110 other reason for Mike's appearance Saturday night. OiISEUVKR. FORKSVILLE ITEMS. R. V. Rogers is at Dushorc, with his brother Fred. Frank Hannon has gone to To wanda, and other points, looking after the interests of his hay mower. F. M. Rogers has returned home from Dushore, where she was taking care of her son Fred, who has been sick with typhoid fever for several weeks. Fred is convalesing. The Odd Fellows are going to have their annual Supper at the Forksville House, on Saturday the 28th inst. They expect to have a good time and an unusually good supper. The young people are enjoying the good sleighing. We saw a num ber of young men out riding with their best girls on Sunday, and some with the other fellows' best girl. Artie said he guessed he would go down toward Hills Grove, cause you know if we should go toward Du shore, we might meet the other fel low coming home and then, you see ? well. Miss Mary Whitely seems to like to ride after a tiood horse, we see her out nearly every day, and al ways the same horse and driver. We thought the pleasant drives were the attraction, but there is a good deal of whispering around among the women that it is Lei escort and there will be another chapter. Constant temp erance instruction, and a constant appeal to conscience, must be funda mental to all progress in temperance reform....
