Our new engine arrived on Wednesday of last week and it is a pretty little piece of machinery. It only occupies 63 by 30 inches of floor space and is a perfect beauty. J. W. Ballard hung the gearing and put the engine together on Satur day. That there would be no de lay to-day, [press day,] we put it in motion Wednesday and it did the work with ease. The REPUBLICAN is now by far the most complete printing ofllcc in the county. The engine is manufactured by the Ship man Engine Company of Rochester, N. Y., of whom we made the pur chase and our friends will be pleased to know that we did not buy on the installment plan but paid spot cash. "While in town call in and sec it. The residence of C. C. Wilcox of Dushore was consumed by fire on Saturday forenoon Dec. 24. The fire company was there, but as this was their first outting, were green in the business and some of the ex cited members leaned too heavy on the handles and smashed the con cerne, hence the building went up in smoke. A good part, if not all of the furniture was saved. There was no insurance on the building and the loss is estimated at about eight or ten hundred dollars. The many friends and neighbors of Mr. Wilcox presented him with some thing over one hundred dollars im mediately after the fire. • Frank Bascos the Italian boy who was run over by a dirt car while al work on the W. &N. B. R. R. in the vicinity of Henry Kohenspargei's an account of which was given in the REPUBLICAN in our issue of the 23, of Dec. died at the Williamsport hospital on Thursday night Dec. 22. He was buried in a Williams port cemetery on Saturday the 24t,h. Mr. and Mrs. E. V. Ingham of the 'Mere enjoyed their Christmas dinner at Judge Ingham's. They came over on Saturday the 24th, that cold day and the Mrs. who has not been out of the house for the past year, stood the trip remarkably well. Freddie is improving daily and her friends has every hope that Bhe will in a short time regain her former good health. United States District Attorney Ellery P. Ingham was on Tuesday evening Dec. 27th, married to Miss Katharine Bailey Barrows, the ceremony being performed by thn Rev. Edward P. Smith at the resi dence of the bride's uncle, Thomas W. Bailey, 541 North Seventh street. Mr. Ingham's father and mother and brother E. V. Ingham of LaPorte, were present at the ceremony. Chas. Seeley formerly of To wan da and who recently purchased the Forksville House, took possession of the same on Monday. We un derstand that Mr. Seeley intones enlarging this world renown hotel stand to compare favorably, in size . with mine hoste who tips the beam at 350. A decided change can be expected. County auditors—Geo. C. Wright, ' Ulysses Bird and J. H. Spencer, 1 assisted by their clerk, Atty. Downs, ! are busy auditing the financial ' standing of the county. These peo ple, each and every one of them are I competent of doing this work not- 1 withstanding the slurs thrust upon ' them by the boys paper-the Dushore I Jtevieir. Pamy Beck of Muncy Valley, 1 formerly of Bernice, was arrested on 1 Saturday by Constable Lowry of t Bernice and placed in jail on Sun- , day. The eharge is fornication and bosterdy. He was released by giv- c ing the desired bail, on Wednesday. Old stale dinners don't go with the railroad men. They are human if they do work on the railroad. Married* Dec. 20tk,4892, at 3p. M-, Flor ence H., daughter of Griffith Phil lips, of Hemlock Grove, Pa., to Wm. J. Yocum, of Benton, Pa., by Rev. J. F. Glass, pastor of the M. E. Church of Muncy Valley. Frank Gallagher will apply for restaurant license at February term. He will hold forth iu the old bank building on Main street. A number of our people are of the opinion that one restaurant Is a necessity at the county seat. The trotting association of Williamsport, Wilkes-Barre and Elmira contemplate leasing Lewis' Lake for the winter season and speed their horses on ice. An en tertainment of this kind would be very amusing to our people. Report of accidents along the line of railroad are quite common these days and serious ones too. Should they continue as common all winter an uninjured employee will be hard to find among the works at the opening of spring. The burning out of John Smyth's chimney on Saturday evening caused no little excitement on our streets. Peple came from every direction be lieving the building to be on fire. Had the Dushore fire company been in sight—the result can only be con jectured. •mm s «a Klklaud. The Republicans of Elkland twp., will hold their caucus for the pur pose of making nominations for township offices at the election house at Eldredville on Saturday evening January 14th 1893, between the hours of 5 and 8 o'clock P. M. The Bazaar which was held in the old bauk building under the auspices of the young ladies of town, on Thursday evening Dec. 22d, was a grand success. The net receipts, were $40.49. This cash will be ap plied toward purchasing a piano for the School Hall. Miss Maie Spullen of Philadelphia and who has spent one or two sum mers at LaPorte, was H welcome visitor to our town last week, and in honor of the event a very pleas ant party was given at the Moun tain House on Thursday evening. Miss Spallen returned to the city on Saturday. Samuel Cole the hardware mer chant of Dushore is doing a good business in this section. He has supplied no less than a dozen or fifteen cook and lobby stoves to parties in this vicinity during the past two or three weeks. The pur chasing parties are all pleased with their goods. . Michael Fember of Lopez, who was sentenced to ten days in the county jail for house breaking at last term of court, was released by the county commissioners on Tues day by paying twenty dollars of the cost and giving his note for the bilante. The total amount of the cost was? 47.45. We received two long strings of poetry relating to the death of a child near Nordmont, this week, but as neither was signed by the writer, both quietly repose in the waste basket. Our readers are no doubt aware that writing poetry of the dead is entirely out of date and con. sidered vulgar by the reading pub lic. * ESTELLA ITEMS. New Year was ushered in with rain.
