w. M. CHENE? - - - Editor FRIDAY, MAY ESTSRED IT I*OST-OFFICE. LAI\>RT tA., AS BKCONb-CfcASS MATTER. J. V. RETTENBURY, WATCHMAKER AND JEWELER, DUSHORE, PA. The President has been indulging in some plain private talk in a pleas ant way on the pension question to republican members of Congress. The present Rtatus ot the matter is what brought the President out. The Senate has passed the depend ent pension bill substantially as it was when vetoed by Mr. Cleveland. The House passed as a substitute for this bill the Morrill service bill which is both a dependent and a service bill. This substitute the Senate has refused to recede from its position and the whole matter has been referred to a conference committee. The President has de termined that this failure to agree on the part of the House and Senate shall not prevent some pension legis lation at the present session if he can help it, and he has been urging the necessity of such legislation up on members of his party. He has not committed himself in favor of either bill, but it is evident that he thinks one or the other of them should become a law without any unneccessary delay. DRIinnEHK ON THEIR JIETAL. Active Warfare Waned A|ialu»t »l»e New I'etilniatiler ill JV. V. Cincinnati, June I.—The State Council of United Commercial Tra velers of America in session here yesterday adopted vigorous resolu tions against the appointment of John A. Place, editor of Oswego (New York) Times, as post-master of that place on account of his sta- ; ting in an editorial that "The term 1 drummer has become synonymous •with that of profigate and masher* They goto a city, and when night relieves them of their duty their j time is spent irr looking up weak and i foolish girls, who are pleased by their lies, flattered by their atten tions, and who become an easy prey." The council characterizes his ap pointment as postmaster as a direct to 250,000 traveling men, and Presi- j dent Harrison and Post Master General Wanamaker are to be re quested to move him. Tlic Clottinif Canvam. During last week twenty-seven delegates were elected to the Re publican State Convention, being sixteen in Allegheny, two each in Beaver, Lebanon and Huntingdon, four in Dauphin and one in Perry. In Allegheny Uhere was no contest, the delegation l being given to Moon tooth, with underneath layers for all the other leading candidates if Moontooth should be taken out of the field after a ballot or two. The thirty-nine delegates from' Philadelphia have been practically selected, although the primaries do not take places until to-morrow. There is a contest in but one dis trict, so that the names of thirty eight of the 1 number are as well known now as they will be after the conventions- This leaves but twenty-four delegates yet to' be named, and they will come from the following counties Chester, 4 Forest, 1 ; Fayettfe, 3 Jefferson, 1 ; Montgomery, 5 ; Pike, 1; Somerset, 3: Washington, 3 ; Westmoreland, 4. It is possible that the decisive delegates may be turned up in the elections yet to come, few as they are. The nomination is not yet settled. Each candidate has a free Held, and one or two have been recently making up some of the time lost earlier in the campaign. It is the first spirited Gubernatorial con test the Republicans of Pennsylva nia have had for a dozen years, and it naturally attracts attention. In these closing contests every thing calculated to stir up bitter ness should be avoided. It is a con test among Republicans, and the followers of the several candidates can well aflord to imitate the can didates themselves and maintain the friendliest relations with each other. Such a course will make matters much easier after the nomination is settled, when erer faithful Republi can will want to fall in line tander the banners of the nominee. No sincere Itepubllcan will tolerate ahy thing likely to interfere with that. The convention will bo entirely j competent to nominate a candidate wiio will represent the best interests of the party and be the choice of its people. Having done this, the Republicans voters can be safely intrusted with the duty of Delecting the ticket in November. A (Dignified Content. The Philadelphia Times is Tree to confess that the contest for the Re publican nomination for (Governor has been up to this time a contest between men in Which the candid ates have kept level heads and given all disputants for place a "memorable example of manhood inthe inevitable conflict of ambition." This from the Times will be hard to eat by the numerous organs that have been croaking from time to time of the bitterness of feeling and the chances for a fight within the Republican party in the event of the success of this or that distinguished aspirant for the nomination. The fight, as the Times says, has teen one which from the start has found the difc ferent candidates working honorably with their friends for the nomination and nothing has been said or done that will prevent the unsuccessful of those Who now seek the nomina tion turning in and assisting in the election of the successful one by the old time Republican majority against any candidate the Democrats can nominate.
