Another Railroad Rumor. The latest railroad rumor is to the effect that the Lehigh Valtey will run over the Philadelphia and Read ing tracks from Ilnll's Station to this city, but the rumor lacks con firmation.— Gazette and Bulletin. Our people were somewhat fright ened by the alarm of fire on Satur day morning. The building known as the stone house on Thorue St., was the scene of the conflagration. Short ly after the alarm had been given the U. N., fire company was on the scene and extinguished the flames before much if &ny damage was done. The fire caught in the attic from a defective Hue. There are twofainilics residing in the building, Messrs. Clias. Sergeant and John Chirk and at the time of the fire the men ft>lks were absent from home. I'lie ladies, however did good work in assisting to quench the flames. The cemetery fence is badly in need of repairs ami should receive the immediate attention of our people. With one or two days work at this date the structure could be repaired and made serviceable for a year or two but if postponed and put over will necessitate a new fence in the very near future. It is true, that what is everybodys business is nobodys business and is apt to be neglected. What | our people should do, however for l the proper management of this es sential and important business is to appoint one good man as a eom mitte to look after and make the proper repairs and beautifying and levy a tax on the people for com-, j pensating him for tho same. A Family Ice Machine. A process has already been dis- 1 covered by which every family can,' w«th but little machinery, manu facture sufficient ice for its own use l daily in a few minutes' time. The process necessitates the use of a cylinder that is capable of holding a pressure of 1,200 pounds of coin pressed air to the square inch, but with the use of 700 pounds the temperature of a certain volume of water can he reduced to 30 degrees bfclow zero 'n half a minute. The machine will cost but a few dollars. —Ex. It is rumored that Patsy Connor of Bernice will bo a candidate for Member, subject to the Democratic Convention this fill I • Patsy is nam be red among the bes\ workers of the Democratic party i i Sullivan county and for the past year? has had the supervision of the Company Store at Bcrnice which has brought him more or less before the public. Should the rumor prove true that Air. Connor is a candidate, the list 01 Democratic aspirants for the hon ors of this office will reach three, which we have already heard of, viz: Russel Karns of LaPorte, ' Josh Lull of Bernice and Patsy Connor of Bernice. The two latter residing in Bernice will give Mr. Karns a trifle the advantage in their convention and the probability is, he will receive the nomination. We have recently hoard it rc~ marked that a Mr. Hawk of Cherry twp., who is slightly insane is re ceiving inhuman treatment at the hands of those in charge of him. Our informant could not say posi tively who his keepers are, but con tinued that the person or persons were either a private individual who lives adjoining the insane man's farm, for which trouble, (if the story is correct) he is to receive the Ilawk property at the date of his, (Hawk's) death. The others blamed for the missconduet of the old man are the overseers of the poor of Cherry twp. In either event the latter are some what in the blame as it is their busi ness to look after such individuals residing in their immediate district. Hawk resides on his farm and is kept in a filthy condition and is fed on cheap and cold nourishments. He was an old veteran a:id we think it would only be just and proper for his comrads in that part of the coun ty to look into the matter and if the story is true, bring the guilty party or parties to justice. The editors of the Dushore papers would do a worth}* act by visiting the scene and publish the same for the benefit of their readers, condemning those in charge of the old veteran to the low -1 est pitch of condemnation.
