The opponents of Governor Hill in bis own party are carrying on the war against lain as vigorously as if the Democratic National Con vention was only a few weeks away and Hill's chances of getting the Presidential nomination were blight. The Nashville American calls ''David Bennett Hill and his hench men" a lot of "political cutthroats," and the St. Louis Republican in dorses the characterization and de clares that the Democrats "will not put Hill on a national tioket under any circumstances." "As a Demo crat in national politics he is dead," it adds. If this sort of knifing pro cess is to begin so early in the Democratic partj r the hope of har mony in 1892 will be dim. The Democratic factions should remem ber that the quinine supply was pretty well depleted by the late grippe and that they may not be able to find enough to tone them selves up for the next campaign after they have become exhausted by a factional warfare. A I'll AIM-tilt IN COWTItOVKRSY. Two Improvement Coiupauica Take a Dlkpnte to tbu fiovernor. A lengthy argument was heard before Governor Beaver and Secre tary Stone yesterday on two ap plications for charters under the recent act providing for the im provement of streams for the raft ing of logs. Two improvement companies, the North Mountain and West Fork, want charters to improve streams in Sullivan and Columbia counties, and they have got into a controversy as to which is entitled to the charter. Hon. Charles R. Buckalcw and An drew L. Fritz, of Blootnsburg; Charles B. Michael, of Philadelphia; "W. B. Given of Columbia, and Colo nel Corcoran, of Williamsporf, ap peared in behalf of the North Moun tain oompany, and 11. M. MoClure, for the West Fork Improvement coir pany. D'cisioii was reserved by the Bjcr< tary of ttie Commonwealth. SONJESTO WN ITEMS. Local Institute held at Sonestown Feb. 7th and Bth, was a failure. On accouut of the storm and as Mr. Emerson Collins Esq., Of Williams port could not be present as sick ness in bis family prevented. It will be held on March 7th 8 th, we understand. Kato's 6ister was very much of feuded at "Mexicans Joe's" sayings in last weeks issue, and says"M. Joe" bad better attend Insti tute at LaPorte again. Of course she don't know of whom she speaks. We think without a doubt Mr. .lacob Lorah smiled more than any other one mau on Friday evening, all because he had his wishes grant ed by seeing the beautiful snow fall in order that he coahl run his lumber offthe mountain. Mr. Lorah i» now beginning to lumber very ex tensively as he has bought several tracts the past year. Harry Grove trackman on the W. & N. B. It. It., fell while lifting the truck of the track last wtek andj cracked several of his ribs, lie is recovering. I John Richart who has been con fined to his bed for the past two weeks, is now able to be out. We kindly advise Johnev to be very careful for should he have a relapse his case would be more hopeless then Kato's. I would just eav to some of the people of our little village, that Mr. McCarty Is not after the position of bar tender or landlord at Hotel Magargle, in iny iniud but simply stops there to [ass an evening or two, with the school or ex~school mam—am I not right Ella May ? The new engine No. 2, on tlio W. & N. B. R. R., passed by our place over the road to Nordmont on Tues day. If she don't deceive her looks she is a dandy three wheeler. Geo. Simmons proprietor of the Sonestown Iron Works, is now reaping a grand harvest, this cold icy weather, lie has two 3"ouug men assisting him from daylight until after dark. May your success continue Mr. George. ! Mrs. Joseph Morrison when com ing to town on Tursday last, found by the roadside a flower in full bloom, known by the Germans as the Christwatsle this is something rare as the llower is seldom found in this section of the country and then to find one in the dead of winter, is very unusual. Sonestown ruay be counted in as being a winter town as well as being a summer resort. Mexican J ok. Editor Charles Emory Smith, of the Philadelphia J'ress has been ap pointed minister to Russia. Salary *17.500. We will publish program of coun ty loeal institute next webk. Space will not permit us to give the same this week. CHARTER NOTICE.
