Local physicians appear to agree in the statement that there has been an unusual amount of sickness dur- ing the present winter. ~The public ed with the grip during the entire season, and theré are at the present time many cases under the care of physicians. The radical changes in the temperature is one of the chief causes for this condition, and nearly all of the cases are the result of ex- posure. Thermometers In various sections <f the town showed different degrees of temperature this morning. The one hanging on the National Bank of Sayre at the corner of Lockhart and Desmond streets registered six below, store, only one block distant from the first, showed that the mercury had tumbled to 18 below. Mrs. George Sluyter, the bride of ouly four months, who came to Sayre in search of her husband, and who while here faiuted in several public places. went to Towanda yesterday and when she arrived at the upper station she fell to the floor in a dead {faint She was revived and then hur- ‘ried to the office of Constable Guy iHollon. She asked Mr Hollon If he ‘had been to Sayre to arrest her, and when she received a negative reply {she sank to the floor unconscious {Again sha was revived and shortly af- {terwards started for the upper sta- {tion in & hack saying that she wanted ito go to Sayre Upon reaching the !station she swooned again Chief | Miller was notified and the woman iwsa taken back to town and was car- led for ~ Her case is indeed a pitiable one Sha ha= been married only about four weeks, and is apparently subject to fits which attack her with _alarming frequency. [It is hoped that the au- ithorities will make provisions for her future, as she certainly needs care The local police officials are of the iopinion that Mrs. Sluyter is an impos- ‘ter and that she has an object in feigning fits. When she went to To- ‘wanda yesterday morning she was ac- companied by a detective from the special officers’ office. After arriv- ‘fog at the upper station a hack was secured and the woman stated that she desired to be taken to the home of her husband's sister. The driver of the hack was given the necessary directions, but when they arrived at her sister-in-law’s home the latter met Mrs Slaoyter and her escort at the door and forbade her to enter, ‘saving, “You can't come In here to throw any of your fits.” Having been refused admittance to the home of her relative Mrs Sluyter then In- structed the driver of the hack to go to the home of a {riend of hers. This request was complied with, but it ap- pears that she did not remain long at the home of her friend, for she was next heard from at the Towanda {postofice where she had another fit iand had to be taken care of by the | postoMce officials. Iron Manufacturer of Pittsburg, Reconciled Now to Son's Marriage Moorhead, Pittsburg—The desth of Miss Anne Katharine Moorhead, who was killed in the Bronx wreck on the New York Central Rallroad a week ago, has re- sulted in a reconciliation between her father, John Moorhead, Jr., million- aire Iron manufacturer, and her brother, John Alston Moorhead, for- mer half-back at Yale, and now ath- letlie director of the Western Univer sity of Pennsylvania. F. C Tillotson, employed at this place as a messenger for the United States Express company. met with a harrowing experience yesterday which will be remembered by him until bis dying day. Tillotson was ordered to Buffalo yesterday morn- ing to transact some business for the company. He left Sayre on passen- ger tralm No. which is due here about five o'clock. He boarded the traln and when it reached Geneva Tillotson went into the telegraph sta- tion to send a message to Savre When he came out the train was pulling out of the station at quite a rapid rate of speed. The train was composed of vestibule coaches and It being necessary for Tillotson to get {to Buffalo on that train he decided to Imount the stéps on one of the coaches and take chances on being able to altract the attention of those on the inside He grabbed the handles on one of the coaches, his feet finding a place on the steps which project a few inches below the platform which closes down from the inside” and makes It impossible for any on the outside to get in With one hand firmly grasping the handle of the coach Tillotson pounded vigorously at the door with the other The little nolse he made Ly this operation was In vain as the rumbl- jing of the train effectually {his efforts attract attention. His {hands began to get numb, and he feared that eventually his hold on {the iron handle bars would relax and he would fall to the ground to meet a horrible death. The atmosphere iwas bitter cold, and as he speculated ion the chances which appeared de- |cidedly against him, he again became desperate and pounded at the closed door until he was exhausted. Like the former effort the second was also 8 fallure. In the meantime the pass- enger train, running at a terrific rate of speed, dashed by numerous freight trains and this fact proved to be another source of danger. The freight cars rocked to and fro, and Tillotson could fairly feel them brush against his clothing. As the train sped on Tiliotson’s fears increased instead of diminished. He began to realize that he could not hold on much longer He was by this thoroughly chilled through and In order to get out of the wind he decided to climb in between the bellows-like apparatus which Is placed between the coaches After considerable effort he sucoseded in getting his body Into the narrow space between the coaches. He was out of the wind now, but found him- self confronted by time another dangerous that the train round a sharp curve to the The coaches would necessarily together on that result in his being squeezed to death.
