Athens—The past few weeks of cold weather has made us huddle around the fire and then we have though that we had a cold time. But when we get an lopsight into the conditions out west we may thank our stars that we have it no worse. In North Da- kota, where the thermometer has run down forty degrees below zero they have had no coal and have been oblig- ed to pack off their families to the schoo! houses and public halls where the whole neighborhood could clus- ter around one fire and thus econi- mise the fuel supply. We have late ly seen a lady that came from there and she gives an thrilling description cl conditions in that region. On some of the ranches hundreds of miles away from the towns women have ilv- ed in solitude apd when the coal fam- ine reached the vicinity they could not get any and have frozen to death right In their homes. When she came east she says that there were 21 dead bodies on the train that she strated on, These were all persons that had frozen 10 death at their own firesides George C. West. An early telephone message today states. that George C. West died at his home in Smithfield township this morning at 3 o'clock, aged 82 years. Mr. West was born in England and came to this country about the time that the Thomas Page family did. He has been very prosperous and accu- mulated a large property. He was a man of sterling integrity, and com- manded the highest respect of all his acquaintances. He leaves jone son Fountain West who lived with him, another son Charles ©. West, and a daughter, Mrs. I. both of Sayre. Jerse Ran Away.
