William Kelley, who claims to hail from Buffalo, and who exhibited a card showing that he was a member of the grain shovelers union, got into & peck of trouble here yesterday af- ternoon when he appropriated to his OWR use a traveling bag belonging to a commercial traveler from Bing- hamion, and later was kicked out of H. Sattier's clothing store for at- tempting 10 steal a slipper which was Iylng on one of the show counters Kelley had been hanging about the men’s waiting room at the Lehigh waz not making any disturbance but ‘itle attention was paid to him About three o'clock A. G Grant, traveilsz salesman from Thulitt Brothers of Binghamton, came Into the station to wait for one of the west- bound tralns. He carried a traveling bag which he left in oue of the seats while he went to the new stand to make a purchase. While transacting while he went to the news stand to tergd himself to the unprotected grip The traveling man missed the grip and al once Informed D J. Kendig, the station agent. The latter got bfsy and finally found a man who saw Kelley take the grip. Kelley was traced to Sattler’'s store and there it was learned that he come In there and had attempted to steal a slipper, but had been caught In the act and was kicked out. Kelley carried the grip with him when he went Into the store, and this was thrown after him when he went out Officer I. H Stephens located Kelley In Vall Brothers saloon and placed him under arrest on a charge of drunkenness. He was placed in the lockup and later in the afternoon a warrant was sworn out before Justice Carey charging lar- ceny. He spent the night In jail and was given a hearing this morning at ten o'clock. Kelley was arraigned before Jus- tice Carey this morning and after pleading not gullty demanded a hear- Ing. Several witnesses were sworn for the commonwealth, all of whom were closely questioned by the pris- oner. He evinced considerable knowl- edge in protecting himself, and after the testimony for the commonwealth was all in Kelley stated that he had nothing to say. He was asked by one of the officers to tell where he lived, but he replied by saying that he was not giving out information for any one just at that time. He has a hard looking face and as the police belleve that he Is wanted elsewhere the court ordered that hls picture be taken. Kelley requested that he be taken to a good photographer, as he did not want to be confrouted by any bum pictures. He was accommodated in this respect. Constable Brougham left with him for Towanda on Lehigh train No. 4. DAIRY DISPATCH SOLD TO LEHIGH. P. Bedford and A. J. Stone of Jeranton, and among those Interested were C. D. Simpson, T. H. Watkins, E. L. Fuller, Mortimer Fuller and A. P. Bedford of Scranton, and George R. Bedford of Wilkes-Barre B. F. Dewey of Flemington, N. J formerly of West Pittston, who was manager of the company, with main office In New York, and A. K. Y., in 15839, and spent his boyhood days in that place. In court yesterday afternoon Pat Flynn, a hobo, was convicted of steal- ing clothing and shoes from the Le- high Valley Railroud company. Sen- tencé was deferred. Flynn, who is a typical bum and a member of the out-of-work clan, plifered a Lehigh car early in December. The officers were nol long in locating him. It was discovered also that he had dis- posed of part of his loot to five Ital- lans, who were also charged with recelving. The Itallaps were brought up for trial yesterday but owing to the fact that the company could not prove the taking of th# property they were discharged. D. A. R. Entertainment. Kendig Is also the sta- tion agent at the Lehigh Valley de- He testified at the preliminary Kendig testified at the preliminary hearing last night that he saw Dillon going over the Packer avenue bridge, and that the man carried a bundle which he threw away when he saw the officer approaching The bundle was picked up by Mr. Kendig and it contained two brass- connections which it is claimed belonged to the company. Dillon, who appeared to be perfectly able to take care of his own rights, asked to see the brass but as It was locked up in the spec- ial officer's office at the station, it was impossible to have It at the hearing Adjournment was therefore taken un- fil ten o'clock this morning This morning the brass connections were brought into court and after listening to the remainder of the tes- timony the justice held Dillon to court in the sum of $200 bail. Dorshelmer of the Wyoniing county bar, while engaged in the trial of an Important trespass case at Montrose, was stricken with heart [allure and died while seated at the counsel table In the presence of his associates E W. Safford and W. D. B Alney represented the plaintiff, and G. P. and R. B. Little were associated with Mr. Dorsheimer for the defendant, the Lehigh Valley Rallroad company. Mr. Safford had made an offer of evi- dence, and Mr. Dorshelmer arose and stated his objections in a clear and able manner. He resumed his seat, but before he could speak again he began to show signs of distress Drs. Gardner and Bardwell, who were present im court as witnesses, immediately went to the lawyer's assistance, but he died while a hypo- dermic Injection was being adminis- tered Court was at once adjourned by Judge Searle and the entire trial list was continued. A party of swindlers consisting of two men and two women have been working in Haz'eton, Bloomsburg and Berwick and were last heard from at Shamokin” The manner of getting money Is by seeking subscriptions for © home for orphans, at the same time exhibiting a paper called “Sunshine” that was Issued in behalf of the home, and those who contributed $1 were given the paper for one year. The Attention of the authorities was called fo the matter and when looked up no home for orphans could be found and the “Sunshine” paper found to be a fake. Two of the party were arrested at Pottsville by Honesdale constables on Friday. The tax dispute between the Wav- erly, Sayre and Athens Traction com- pany and Sayre borough, which has been In the courts of Bradford county since 1501, was settled yesterday in an amicable manner, the borough pay- ing to the traction ‘company the sum of §101 besides liquidating the costs of sult. It will be remembered that the borough collected the amount mentioned above of the traction com- pany for taxes, and that the company pald under protest, taking the ground that It was exempt from borough taxes under the state law. Afterward the Traction company commenced sult against the borough to recover the sum and yesterday, on advice of counsel, the borough paid the com- pany's claim and the costs, which amounted to more than the original sum Involved.
