G. Bartlett Closed Last Night on n Judgment Note Last night Sheriff Griffin came to Sayre and levied on the entire stock TE ; of jewelry aud fixtures in the store ‘value for your money. There which has been conducted by FP. W. is simply no comparison when CG. Bartlett on lower Desmond street Sea : for the past five years. The sheriff : it comes to siyle and work- | ya. armed with what is known in ‘legal parlance as a “fi. fa” which was Wenld Have Resalied In » Few Days of Perotinitis. Yesterday afternoon Doctors Fish, Cummings and Lynn perfocmed an au- topsy on the body of William R. Stev- enson, whose somewhat sudden death was recorded in yesterday's issue of this paper. The result of the autopsy showed the presence of ulcers in the lining of the stomach. Some of them had apparently begun to heal, but one of them was guile extensive and had already eaten through the organ. The physicians state that had the heart of iissued by the prothonotiry oa a judg- -ment note given by Mr. Bartleit to the First National Bank of Sayre about three months ago. About that ‘time Mr. Bartlett made a settlement {with his creditors. Ht was Involved ‘lo the extent of about §P.000, but suc- | ‘ceeded In arrifliging £ 7 a settlement 'so that this amount was reduced (o ‘little over $6,000. The First National bank took an assignment of these jclaims and advanced the money with iwhich to liquidate them. Bartlett then gave his judgment note to {secure the bank, and at the same time ientered into an agrement where by \F. T. Page was to take charge of the ‘store and stock. In connection with ‘this agreement Mr. Bartlett was to re- ‘main in the store, conduct the business as formerly, and turn over to the bank the proceeds of the sales, less the amount required to successfully con- duct the business. The money thus turned over to the bank was to ap- {ply on Bartlett's indebtedness to that ‘institution, and at the expiration of six months from the date of the agree- iment he was to have the privilege of {buying the stock back. | The contract will not expire until some time in February, but it appears {that the bank has recently felt that {it was insecure and accordingly in- {structions were given to the prothono-| ‘tary to issue on the judment note : Sheriff Griffin closed the doors of ‘the store last night and has advertls- ‘ed the stock and fixtures for sale. The store is up-to-date and contains ‘a fine stock of goods. Mr. Bartlett icame here about five years ago, and during this time has made many i friends, all of whom will regret that jhe has suffered financial reverses. It = is thought that he will be able to effect a settlement of the matter before ithe goods are sold at sherifl's sale EY & PAGE, SAYRE AND ATHENS Orr & Co. and Keysstone overalls and working clothing. Both Men Are Charged With Cutting Timber Trees Without the Con. seat of the Owner. James Smith and Arthur Mungo. charged by T. P. Maney with having stolen and carried away a gquantiv of lumber and wood from his proper- ty on the east slde of the Susquehan- na river, were discharged at a hear- ing held yesterday afternon before Justice Carey. At a subsequent hear- lug however, both men were held to the next court of quarter sessions on a charge of cutting and removing tim- ber trees, and removing the same with- out the consent of the owner of the property on which they were cut. This is the second time that Smith has been proceeded against on account of cut- ting and carrying away Umber from Mr. Mapey's property. Smith had a contract for cutting a strip of wood- land 200 feet back of the river, but Mr. Magey claims that he exceeded his contract and has cut trees on cer- tain sections of the land not Includ- ed in the contract. Smith was arrest- ed once before and was held to the grand jury on a charge of larceny but they faliled to indict, on the ground presumptively that trees are part of the reality and therefore incapable of theft. The charge on which Smith was held to the grand jury yesterday, Is framed under a special act which makes {t a misdemeanor to cut and Carry away growing trees from an- other man's property. C. C.
